Help! What do you put all your kids stuff into once you stop using a pushchair ??!

Help! I have two DS's who have just about stopped using the pushchair now. I need some ideas on where to put all our stuff when we go on trips out / picnics etc etc as I won't have the pushchair to just bung everything into.

DH and MIL have suggested a nice (?) rucksack but I really cannot bring myself to hump a rucksack around to be honest, I am not the rucksack and fleece sort. Wink

Things I need to cart about are drink beakers x2, couple nappies for the youngest one (hopefully not needed soon but then spare clothes will be needed instead for a while!), sometimes a small picnic lunch.

Do I just get a big holdall sort of bag ? Which one ? I need one thats a reasonable size without being so big it looks ridiculous and a reasonable price too.

Argh! What do you ladies do ? There must be loads of you out there in the same situation ?

Ahh it was a sad day for me when we folded up the buggy for the last time and yes i was stuck for carrying stuff too.

I did get a wee bag, bigger than a handbag but big enough and nice enogh to pass as a handbag.
Got it from a sports shop as i recall as it had a bit of bling on it, was only about a tenner.
have a look on ebay.

I'm going to get a shopping trolly. I don't care if I do look ridiculous.

I'd like to know the answer to this too - only one DS but he's practically out of the buggy now. Not so bad at the moment as we drive most places, but it's going to be a PITA when we're on holiday..

I don't want to resort to a rucksack either

I'm not suggesting putting everything in there but I am a firm believer that if a child is old enough to walk a reasonable way without a buggy then they can carry some of their own stuff.

Both of mine had small back packs at this kind of age and within them they carried their own bottles of water, a small toy/book and depending on the time of year a sun hat and/or pac-a-mac.

You have to use your common sense about how much they can carry and how far but it all helps to ease the load for you and starts good habits for them for later.

Sadly for daytrips out I have had to resort to a rucksack. A normal bag will just give me back ache with all their crap in it.

A shopping trolley for picnics and days out here too.

You get used to it, felt an idiot at first but it's so useful and I hate carrying a rucksack.

Mine has an insulated section so the picnic stays cool and it fits loads in.

PotatoesOfTheCarribean · 24/03/2011 12:59

Ahh... perfect

(also - aww

shopping trolleys ??? really ??? Noooooo, that is one stage further/worse than a rucksack!! Only old ladies have them don't they ?

Oh, I have a shopping trolley as the supermarket is only a 25min walk away so not worth the petrol for a small shop - I'm nearly 33 though so some might think me old.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 24/03/2011 14:11

Shopping trolley is much preferable to a rucksack IMO. Rucksacks make your back ache and get in the way.

I use my shopping trolley with prideGrin

If you're old at 33, MumInBeds that must make me ancient, I'm late 30'sConfused

pinkthechaffinch · 26/03/2011 08:32

I have a trolley which I used for carting back loads of cheap fruit and veg from the market when i was pregnant.

I am 33, was 31 at the time. Am not known for my stylishness tho, it has to be sadi.

By the time DS was out of pushchair the wipes/spare pants/drink/book needed to schlep about with him fitted in my handbag or in his little rucksack (which I often ended up carrying but hey ho). For longer days out we took a rucksack which DH carried.
