Nappy changes = aaarrrggghhhh!!!!!!

DS, nearly 8 months despises having his nappy changed. He's fine until you get the nappy off and once it's on again he's back to normal but inbetween he's a nightmare.

He wriggles, scoots up and off the changing mat (Which is always on the floor luckily) rolls over and crawls away, kicks, screams, cries.

I try to give him something to distract him and play with while he's on the mat but it doesn't hold his attention for long and it takes 2 people to change his nappy without both ds and I ending up in tears of frustration. This isn't practical when ds does at least 3 poos a day and dh is in work for most of this time! Nappy changes are the worst part of the day for me (and ds).

So far all the advice I've had from my mum and MIL is along the lines of learning to put nappies on while the baby is facing away from you/standing up/running around but I've tried it and its really hard [sulks]

Please someone tell me he will grow out of this.....

Is he sore/red?

DS loves this "game" and is now 12 months...I am hoping he will stop soon but no sign as yet.

The only way I'm managing it at the moment is to lie him on the mat on the floor, sit to the side of him, then put my leg over his chest/stomach so that my foot is on the floor on the other side of him, and my leg is pinning him down (not hard so that I'm squashing him - there's still space between my leg and him - but just so that he can't roll or sit up). It seems a bit unkind but otherwise it's just a nightmare!

He hasn't got nappy rash but does have a lot of eczema (it's all on his back, shoulders and face atm) and the bit that seems to irratate him most is at the top of his bum cheeks/bottom of his back - as soon as he his naked he scratches away at it. It's (very) slowly coming under control but I do think this may be part of the problem.

Do you know if reuseable nappies could help the eczema at all?

The other part of the problem is that he doesn't want to stop playing! I may have to try that idea pinky :)

ds is also the same, also 8 months. Sometimes I wrap it around him while he is sitting or crawling, sometimes I try and keep a hand 'clean' to keep handing him toys. I sympathise as its not easy (thankfully for us ds doesn't often do 3 poos a day!)

We use La Roche Posay Nutritic cream on the bits of eczema he gets on his face and its nearly gone now. I think its worth giving the nappies a go as it may help the skin breathe more. BUT...

...you have to change them more often than disposables. Grin

if you need to get the nappies on him while he is standing up, moving around etc then pull ups are much easier and they work just the same as nappies ime so maybe give those a try? i started to use them on my ds1 when he was a similar age as he was too wriggly
also probably some people wont agree with this but i keep mine on a high up changing table type surface, even if they are mobile (they are obviously fully supervised and not left so not really dangerous imo) but the benefit of it is that they have nowhere to escape to, so can't crawl off with poo still on their bum or anything like that! i find it makes things much much easier...
also for ds2 i have to do a lot of singing (song with actions etc to keep him busy) to keep him from trying to roll over, and normally works, but i think you would have probably already tried that one
