Help! Wind build up and I've tried everything

Hi everyone, My 2 week old DS has been screaming the house down since 5am this morning and there is nothing I can do to calm him. He's managed a 30 min nap but he wimpered all the way through it (as he did almost all night). I think he has a build up of wind (he's arching his back, stretching and he's belly is hard) but I can't seem to shift it. He's does a little burp half way through a feed and a big one afterwards but that doesn't seem enough!

Can anyone give me any advice to get rid of this build up? I'll try anything...

What have you tried? He could be massively overtired, hence screaming, hence wind. Do you have a sling? How are you feeding?

I'd go to a dark room, rock gently and sssshhh quite loudly near his ear. Might take a while but should send him to sleep. Let him sleep on you, chest to chest then gently rub his back. This will get the wind out.

He needs quite a lot of day sleep - little babies generally struggle being awake more than 1 hour, especially in the morning. It's important that he gets lots of naps - better day sleep means better night sleep. I made the mistake offering DS stay awake too long in the day and he became a screaming overtired mess.

Hi I have a 3 month old DD and had exactly the same problem for a few weeks her for the first few weeks. We found Infracol (can be used from Birth) worked wonders, we also found rocking back and forth, rubbing her tummy and running our fingers up and down her back worked well. Bouncing also worked (just a couple of bounces on your knee otherwise you might get sick rather than wind!) Are you bottle feeding? If so swirl the bottles rather than shake, this reduces the air mixed in with the milk. Once we tried these she settled right down. Good Luck!

Do you have one of those large inflatable exercise balls, by any chance? I used to sit on it with both DDs and bounce gently. I held them upright/on the shoulder for wind and cradled in my arms for sleep - worked a treat. Never failed to make me burp too...

Poor you. Our 4 week old has struggled with wind since day 3. We've changed to Dr Brown bottles, which are a faff but definitely made a difference, and now always use Infacol which has also helped, and gets better the more you use it. We've reduced the feed & wind cycle from 2.5 hours to less than an hour (so we now also get some sleep!).

When he has wind lower down I cycle his legs or rock his legs from side to side to move it on, which also can help. Oh, and rubbing rather than patting his back seems to be more effective.

But sometimes there just seems to be nothing you can do and some gently rocking and rubbing at least soothes it.

weak fennel tea or v weak redbush tea is good. Just 1 or 2 oz. They use redbush iin south africa for colic in babies, google it.

Also iv e heard rubbing he tummy with something warm is good, ive heard there are cushions esp designed for this
