problems with bum genuis nappies-help

Help- Any one using or have used bum genuis birth to potty nappies and had problems?
Once my twins got to about 12 months, the nappies would not last them through the night, and in fact during the day, after an hour and a half they would be soaked during the day, and would need a complete change. I have stuck strictly to the washing guidelines since I have had them. I went back to the retailer that I bought them from, and after 6 months of negotiations, and having one nappy sent back to bum genuis, they are stating the problem is 'delamination' and it has been caused by either washing above 60 degrees, or using nappy soak. neither of which I have done. I feel quite angered that I invested a lot of momney into these nappies, have stuck exactly to the washing guidelines, but now the nappies are basically useless, I cannot get a refund or exchange, and I am being blamed for the fault. Is there any one else out there with similar complaints?
Regards

Oh dear that doesnt sound good :(
Have you dried them on a radiator as that will damage the PUL?

rippet · 22/03/2011 09:05

Thank you for your reply. the outers hav always been dried on the airer or the line, but the inners we did dry in the tumble on a low heat during the winter. Has anyone else experienced these problems and has tumble dried them?
Regards

Tumble drying shouldn't damage PUL - in fact it should help to reseal it.
I would try to hot tumble dry the outers in case it helps Smile

And, this rippet, is why I gave up on BG a long time ago! They are expensive nappies and don't last. I have actually had better success with the much cheaper coolababy which also have poppers so you don't get the other problem of worn out applix. The other thing I have found with all pockets is that once the boys were over 18 months I always needed two inserts.

Hmm...what about vinegar? Did you ever use vinegar in the wash? If not, im a bit clueless as to why they would have delaminated, sorry!

Ive had some bg's for about 2 years and the pul is still fine on them- but they are barely usable anymore (and havent been for a while) because the aplix tabs are all curled and not sticky anymore so I have been disappointed with the quality of those. I prefer poppers now for sure for that reason

BG have never lasted either of my girls through the night - at any age so I'm not surprised to read that they haven't worked for your twins after the age of 12m. I find a two parter better for night times - bamboozle stretch and motherease wrap or Ellas house bumhuggers are also good.
I bought my BG v3s preloved and have used them for 2 1/2 years. The velcro has curled a bit but are still useable.
When DD1 got a bit older I started to boost with a Little Lamb bamboo booster instead of the smaller microfibre booster so still used the big one on top and then bamboo underneath and that helped a lot. I would definitely try another type of booster before abandoning these nappies altogether.
I have never tumble dried any of my nappies however if you do think there is a problem with the outers then as sasamaxx suggests I would try tumbling the outers for a bit as that is supposed to help reseal PUL and can make velcro more sticky again.

Baba Me (European distributor for BGs) sell a BG repair kit for a £1. New velcro bits, wash tabs and new leg elastic and instructions on how to fix.

The BG V2 was bad for velcro and I replaced mine with poppers, my V3s did much better although still curly (but dont get used as much now so havent bothered repairing) and V4 are meant to be better again although I dont have any of those to verify this.

You can also use a nitcomb on your velcro sticky tab side to clear out the fluff and threads and all the other unmentionable bits that get caught in there. Makes a big difference to the grip.

I still loved my BGs, they are just a bit trim now for my chunky 2 year old. When I think how much they got used compared to my other nappies then they wore pretty well really. I prefer them with poppers, but with velcro are a fab and reliable intro to cloth nappying imo.

Thank you all for your responses. sorry to ask but can someone tell me what pul stands for?

also how long do you recommend tumble drying the outers for to reseal them?

No I have never used vinegar.

Lastly to all those that have had problems or been disappointed with your BG nappies, have any of you returned to your retailor for advice or refunds, seeing as they are susposed to be 'BIRTH TO POTTY' nappies, and if so who was your retailer and how did you get on?

PUL is Polyurethane Laminate (I may have spelt that wrong!) which is the stuff they use to make the outers of the BGs waterproof. Most pocket nappies are made from PUL - basically it is the coloured outer fabric. If you turn the pocket inside out you will see a plastic coating on the fabric, it is this they are saying has delaminated, i.e. the plastic coating has come away from the fabric.

Can you see any bubbles or rips in the plastic coating which has caused it to come away? If not then 30 mins on hot should hopefully reseal PUL (less if you dont have a 15/20 min cooler temp at the end of your cycle. Worth a try and hope it works for you.

I've never had a problem with this with BGs, although I did have a problem with one of my BG organics where the popper ripped through the strechy tab. I had bought direct from Baba Me. There service wasnt the best, but only in the fact they were slow. I sent the nappy back and got a replacement and postage refunded.

Your retailer may well be having to deal with Baba Me on your behalf, and maybe even with BG back in the states. How many nappies is it?

Good luck., hope it works out for you.
