breastfeeding and dummies

I've just had my second baby (now 3 weeks) and breastfeeding is going really well. With my first child i introduced a dummy at 6 weeks because he was such a sucky baby and it really helped him to settle.

It looks like this baby is going to be just as sucky. When is it ok to introduce a dummy? Or can anyone suggest a way to avoid using one this time round? (i secretly hate dummies!)

Thanks x

if bf is going well you could try one now, i think

2 of mine had a dummy from v early and both bf until post 1yr

1 was a dummy-refuser (little gitGrin)

i openly LOVE dummies

I hate dummies, think they look bloody awful. Sorry if that offends... If you are bf, why not just let him have the breast if he wants to suck? Sorry if that sounds a bit simplistic but breastfeeding is more than nutrition blah blah...

It's up to you though. Some women hate the idea of letting their babies feed for comfort but it didn't bother me. But then I am a lazy cow and quite happy to sit and bf all evening....

Just because you use a dummy does not mean you are anti comfort-feeding, or are some 4hr feed routine loon Hmm

I used one with 2 of mine because they would comfort feed SO MUCH that they would get terrible gripey pain/wind/endless possetting which unsettled them

Sucking a dummy pacified them. A bf dummy-using baby soon lets you know when they are hungryfor milk not a teat

My DD has had one since early on. not affecting breastfeeding in anyway, she feeds little and often in the day (5mo) and wakes once sometimes twice in the night.

she only has it when she's tired, then spits it out before going to sleep. i offer her the breast but sometimes i think sucky babies just like to suck something without milk flowing out :)

She doesn't use it willynilly, and she can go to sleep with or without

OP, if you are bfing then I would definitely wait until six weeks or it could interfere with dc's interest in latching on. That is the advice from all the bf organisations.
