Night nappy disaster

We tried our new night nappy combo last night. Tots bots stretchy and wool wrap.

This morning vest, night gown, sleeping bag, sheet and waterproof sheet are all varying degrees of soaked.

Where did I go wrong?

I washed and lanolized the wrap. I washed the stretchy.
I was going to boost it, but listened to DH when he pointed out that it was meant to be super absorbent. But I can't believe a booster would have made that much difference to such a massive leak.

Any advice please?

how many times did you pre-wash the nappy?

Most people i know who use cloth at night always boost.... maybe with 2 or even 3 boosters.

For night time id use bamboo, several boosters, and i dont really trust wool wraps either (though i know people who do and swear by them and dont get any leaks so work for them!)

FlingonTheValiant · 17/03/2011 10:16

It's a bamboo nappy. I think it maybe needs another wash, I only put them through twice.

I think I'll stick hemp boosters in tonight as well and see if that helps a bit.

Thanks nannyl :)

i think bamboo needs even more prewashing than cotton

i thought cotton needed washing at least 4 time, bamboo 8 - 10+
Perhaps keep it in washing machine and stick it through every load you do? (It doesnt needs drying every single time.)

The more you wash the more absorbant it gets.

do you have any more waterproof wraps to try while it gains absorbancy?

Did you lanolise properly?

FlingonTheValiant · 17/03/2011 10:31

The problem was that he was peeing his way through everything we have. I'll have to stick him back in huggies until I've washed them some more.

Thanks again!

I use a P'Tits Dessous insert with a Tots Stretchy - it is very similar material and does the job.

Pingpong · 17/03/2011 18:51

definitely pre-wash more and definitely boost!
I have also read in various places that bamboo needs 8-10 washes to get it up to absorbancy. I would add one or two little lamb bamboo boosters.
I tried wool and didn't like it and find a Motherease Rikki wrap very reliable.

FlingonTheValiant · 17/03/2011 20:12

I've put them through the wash twice more today, and I have two loads to do tomorrow, do I'll put them through then too.

I have some little lamb hemp boosters, so I'll put those in as well.

I thought I had lanolised properly, but I'm not sure now. The wool wrap got a real soaking last night though and still smells. So I'll rewash and relanolise it tomorrow. Hopefully that'll sort it.

I think after tomorrow I'll put the Stretchies on him but with a ME wrap until they've had a few more washes.

Thanks everyone!

I would boost and we use a PUL wrap as it does stop the wee. Our Tots Bots Bamboozle is boosted twice with bamboo boosters yet it is always wet in the morning. The PUL wrap hasn't let anything through yet!

I avoided the washing situation by buying second-hand Grin

mummynutter · 20/03/2011 22:04

Yeh I would use a PUL instead too, we always used to get wicking with our wool because the nappies got so soaked at night.
Try boosting with an extra insert and definately use a PUL wrap instead.

FlingonTheValiant · 21/03/2011 09:12

Tried again last night after washing the nappies more. We had the Stretchy, a hemp booster and the wool wrap and it was a success! Soaking nappy, but the wool and his clothes were fine. And his bum was dry-ish.

Thanks very much everyone!

great! Grin

sleeplessinderbyshire · 23/03/2011 22:06

gosh - when I've tried cloth at night we've used an ella house bumhugger with 4 hemp boosters and the lot was totally sodden (and she could barely that night as the bulk between her legs was so huge) I've given up on cloth at night

Pingpong · 23/03/2011 23:49

sorry to hear the bumhugger didn't work for you Sleepless.
Hemp is great but it is a slow absorber so sometimes a microfibre layer is good as well as that soaks up quickly and then the hemp is good for underneath. What age is your DD? I found when I was still feeding DD at night it was a challenge to get through the night with cloth (but we did manage) but now she is no longer feeding (at night) I can use a lot less boosting. Disposables gave her terrible nappy rash so I had to find a cloth solution for night time.

Cumbrianlass2 · 24/03/2011 22:41

plus hemp needs 8-10 washes to get up to full absorbancy. if you tried it with all new hemp may not have been much cop to start with.

Pingpong · 24/03/2011 23:37

ah good point cumbrianlass2 Smile

sleeplessinderbyshire · 26/03/2011 18:06

have used ella's house all day every day for 6 months or so so they've probably had 20 washes at least and still no good
