Washing pocket nappies

Have decided to give BumGenius a go when DC1 arrives.

Here's the dumb question:

When you take the used nappy off, do you need to take out the insert to wash them?

I'm guessing yes...

No - they invariably fall out be themselves. It can get very messy if you try.

You don't need to but I usually do. If there is poo on the nappy I would take the inserts out so that I can rinse the shell of the nappy in the loo.
Also if you have the velcro ones you need to remember to stick the flaps down before washing otherwise you get a big pile of nappies all stuck together!

I never pull the inserts out, and they always separate in the wash. I think it may depend though on which way you put the folded part of the insert, as I noticed that when I tried once putting the folded part to the front, it didn't separate, I think it wedges in a bit when put that way. Regarding the Velcro tabs, I got into the habit of just sticking them to the laundry tabs as soon as I undid the nappy.

Depends on the brand. our bumgenius yes we do take the inserts out otherwise they normally get all bunched up in the machine and then we need to wash them again!
Some pockets like the Smartipants have a self removing insert though so you dont need to remove those, which I really like about them.

Ok, one of the final questions...

When I wash them the first time to improve absorbency before using them, is it still the 1/4 usual amount of non bio? Then should I rinse to get rid of any residue?

I personally would use that much but do them a couple of times then put them on an extra rinse before useing for the first time x
