Cutting baby's hair - any tips?

I'm a bit worried about cutting my dd's hair. She's only 7 months but it's grown past her eyes and is nearly at the end of her nose. At the moment I part her hair and keep sweeping it across to the side but every time she rubs her eyes or moves something across her face her hair ends up in her eyes again.

I bought some hairdressing scissors the other day and thought I'd cut it when she's asleep but I'm concerned that she'll wake up when I'm doing it and I'll end up injuring her. I'm also scared it'll look stupid but that's a minor issue.

Anyone else done this before? Got any tips?

Sorry I cheated with dd and got my hairdresser to do her for free....

handlemecarefully · 24/10/2005 10:44

Take her to the hairdressers

NomDePlume · 24/10/2005 10:45

DON'T DO IT ! IME, it starts off well but ultimately ends in wonky disaster

either take her to the hairdressers, or do it in the bath.
i avoided this problem entirely by shaving her hair off three or four times when she was a baby, last time was about four months of age. id lay her down in the bath, and gently sweep the razor over her scalp. she didnt even notice it. so by the time she had hair long enough to need a trim, she was perfectly content to sit in the high chair and let the hairdresser cut it for her.
i would be scared of trying to cut her hair myself withthe scissors.

dd3 had her 1st haircut the other day. i sat with her on my lap, i held her arms down, my dad held her head straigh and my mum cut her fringe.

iota · 24/10/2005 10:51

I used to trim my boys hair with blunt ended scissors - I wouldn't use pointed ones, just snipped off the wisps round the ears and tidied the fringe.

First took them to the hairdresser when they were over year old

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 24/10/2005 10:55

Jess currently has wonky fringe because of me!!! OOOOPS!

Oh well, next time I WILL take her to the hairdressers!

GillL · 24/10/2005 11:04

I don't know if this is right but I've been told by several people that hairdressers won't cut a baby's hair until their at least a year old.

why? my dd3 needed a haircut at 6months really, she was born with a head full and i just cut it now at 8months as it was well past her eyes and she removed any clips i did put in.

spookylucy · 24/10/2005 11:08

Ive never done it with a baby but someone on here recommended putting sellotape across forehead and snipping along the line. Works a treat every time. Might work if baby was asleep.

GillL · 24/10/2005 11:13

Probably because their head is more stable. DD won't keep her head still for a second. Perhaps they're worried about cutting their head and getting sued.

This info did come from my sil so I should take it with a pinch of salt. She thinks that a McDonalds happy meal is healthy for her son because she asked for no salt.

My hairdresser cut ds' hair under 12 months...

handlemecarefully · 24/10/2005 11:15

Guess it depends upon the hairdresser...

Kidstrack2 · 24/10/2005 11:22

Ds had his first hair cut at 6m and dd had hers at 8weeks, both have really thick and masses of hair. Did try and copy the hairdresser once and decided to trim ds at 8m and made a mess round the ears, was ever so grateful that his hair grows so fast.

yowlingmonster · 25/10/2005 09:56

My ds was up to haircut no. 4 by the time he was 12months old. I did the first cut at about 12 weeks old but was really hard to get even so all others have been at hairdresser, they use a no. 8 razor and it is all done in about 2 minutes, dont know that this would work for a wee girl though.

Bozza · 25/10/2005 10:03

DS had his first cut by the hairdresser at 12 months. DD (hair and growth rate very similar) has not yet had hers touched. She is 17 months and wears it in a clip. But not allowed clips at nursery so I just try and brush it to the side.

beetlejuice73 · 25/10/2005 10:35

DD 15 months been haircut by me with rounded scissors since about 6 months.
Current approach is 'snip here, snip there', for regular management of the bits in her eyes but still allowing it to grow long. Realise I'm not good at the big styling cuts, so just sticking to maintenance for now.

Seona1973 · 25/10/2005 13:25

When I first cut dd's fringe I sat her in the highchair with her straps on and used clasps to keep the hair that wasnt to be cut out of the way. I then cut it carefully one section at a time and tried to make sure it was reasonably straight!! She also had her first cut at the hairdressers under 1 year (around 6 months I think). She sat on my knee and I took a few toys with me to distract her attention from the hairdresser.

saltire · 25/10/2005 14:20

My oldest had loads of hair, and i used to wait until he'd fallen asleep in the buggy and trim the front. When he was about 1 we started taking him to a hairdresser. Do whats easier for you.

GillL · 25/10/2005 16:57

Thanks. I really don't think she'll sit still long enough for a hairdresser to cut her hair. I'm worried they'll poke her in the eye or something. I think I'll have a go at the weekend and just hope it doesn't go horribly wrong!

This is interesting. My ds (1) has the most daft hair, it's short on the sides but getting really long on top. It looks like a flat mohawk and I'm sure people look at me and think 'what have you done to that poor baby'

Maybe I will have a go now..

bramblina · 31/10/2005 23:16

At least you can let girl's hair grow long and get away with it! My ds is 12 weeks and hair is in his eyes from all directions! It's 2 1/2 inches long! Sideburns half inch past ear lobes! But then again my sister is a hairdresser so I'll just give her the problem! Did you have a go this weekend?
