How to get toddler & newborn to and from car distance of 100metres

Hello All

I am new mum again! yay - the only thing that is troubling me is how to transfer my newborn and my toddler (2yrs up a steep hill/drive that is 100m long)

I live in scotland - it rains alot & holding the toddler/newborn is a bit much - and the walk to the house is long - i cannot drive up it - it takes approx 2-3mins to get into the house

  1. do i take the newborn in first and leave in the cot - but risk the toddler crying seeing me walk away

  2. take the toddler in & hope she ok to sit in cot and look at book - and leave the newborn in the car

  3. do i have single buggy in back of car - buggy toddler - carry newborn - and take both to the house - its a bit faffy with the buggy the whole time but i get the both of them to the house

I know this seems slightly insane - i am sleep deprived and mildly paranoid with it :) - just not really sure what to do

thanks!!!

Get a sling - strap on the baby and push the toddler in the buggy.

carry the baby and get the toddler to walk

Either what Hamburger said or carry newborn in car seat? Could toddler walk up holding your hand?

I had one of them cocoon carrycot bag things from t he phil and teds and used to sling that over my shoulder, lasted the newborn til she was about 4 months - even if you hate/don't want a P&T, you can get the carrycots 2nd hand from about £30. DS was 16 months when newborn arrived and he wouldn't always walk.

Sling. Then you can easily hold toddler's hand whioe you walk together.

Or if you have to do them one at a time, take toddler first, put in front of telly then rush back for the baby.

But remember that the toddler is getting older all the time!

i would carry the baby and if toddler can not be trusted to walk nicely then put them in reins or a reins backpack. i used to have my baby in p&t cucoon and carry him in that, then ds on one of those bumble bee backpack reins until he became more trustworthy but at 2 he might be okay to just walk and hold hand, or he soon should start to be okay at that so will get easier

Carry the baby while the toddler walks. The toddler will soon get used to it. 2-3 minutes walking isn't a huge amount for a 2yr old.

Pushchair + walk

Or

Pushchair + buggyboard

I Carried newborn in arms/carseat/Sling and walked with toddler.

Dont worry you will soon find what works best for you.

Congrats :)

Get yourself a sling, it'll see you out of all those tricky situations.

NonnoMum · 14/03/2011 20:24

And you don't have to get the fancy-pants (loadsamaterialswishing everywhere) swing. For the walk to the car you just need an easy access second hand baby Bjorn or similar.
I would have the baby in that and then could manage to carry the toddler on my hip at the same time. Would strap toddler in first. Would leave the rear-facing baby seat sideways facing the door so could easily lower the baby in before swivelling it round and refastening it.
HTH.

Brilliant thank you very much - will do a few test runs this week - toddler walks well most of the time - its just the lashing rain, snow, sleet scenario we are experiencing at the moment that makes me think about fast entry into the house

but i guess if toddler born in northern climate she might need to get used to getting a wee bit wet!!
