Sling - quick shout out for advice before I order...

Think I'm more or less settled on the Kari-me. I've heard it mentioned a lot and it seems quite versatile...

Am about to order one from their website. Any pearls of wisdom before I do?

Anyone use one? Anyone have one that they have found is better?

I have 10 wo refluxy/collicky dd and mainly need it for holding her and having hands free about the house, and ideally would like her to be able to breastfeed when in it out and about etc...

Oh, and has anyone ordered anywhere else cheaper, that delivers quickly and is reliable etc...

I didn't get on with a borrowed one. I got a peanut shell one- amazing!

I ended up cutting it to make a pattern and I made about 7 or 8.

I had a Kari-Me, a Moby and a Sleepy Wrap - the Sleepy Wrap was my favourite. I found the fabric of the SW the best in that it seemed to have the perfect 'give' whereas I found the Moby too stiff. I found the Kari-Me good too but its quite wide.

Frankly they are all much of a muchness, we are talking minor details here. if I had only had a Kari-Me I would have been delighted with it, stretchy wraps are the best thing ever with a newborn.

Megglevache · 11/03/2011 09:59

zgaze I absolutely agree- the best peanut slings I made were with a 2 way cotton stretch, I made one for the hot weather too out of a gauzie type of fabric.

I love my Kari-me, both DDs had most of their daytime naps in it til they were 6 months old. The 9-month-old still goes in it every now and then. I also tried a ring sling but it never felt secure enough - with the kari me there is no way the baby is falling out, and it's comfortable for you and the baby.

Only downside is if you're out and about and want to take the baby out for a while and then put them back in again you have to re-tie the whole bloody thing. Very difficult to do if you've got noone to hold the baby for you! But perfect for wearing around the house or for short trips.

Oh, and you may well be able to get it mich cheaper on ebay if you don't mind second hand Wink

BertieBotts · 11/03/2011 10:30

You don't have to re-tie it if you take the baby out and back in - I never did anyway :)

I prefer a 100% cotton stretchy wrap to the kari-me which is a little too stretchy IMO. But as zgaze said, minor details!

I think the sa-be "babywear" slings are the cheapest stretchy wraps around. They sell through an ebay shop so their feedback should tell you about their delivery times etc.

I have a kari me, and don't always retie afterr taking the baby out for a bit, but it does tend to loosen. Also, I find it gets in the way of breastfeeding when I take DS2 out for a feed, so often as not, it comes off entirely. As long as I have somewhere safe to put the baby! Grin

I think it's saved my life this time round, but DS2 is showing signs that he doesn't like it much. SadSad He is only 11 weeks! I'd like to try some woven types but keep missing the local slingmeet.

BertieBotts · 11/03/2011 11:13

Oh no, Reshape! Is it the position he doesn't like or something else do you think?

Ilovethedoctor · 11/03/2011 11:13

Bubba Moe - excellent.

tryingtoleave · 11/03/2011 11:50

I had a didymos - it was great. Used it until about 15 months.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 11/03/2011 15:55

Bertie - no idea! He generally is happy to go in it for an hour or so once a day, but if I try to get him back in it with about three hours, he objects! He also gets cross if he's awake when I pop him in - doesn't seem to like the firm embrace of the shoulder strappy bit holding his head against me. And he almost always refuses to turn his head sideways on, so I have to check constantly that I'm not smothering him in my cleavage! Grin

We still use the tummy-to-tummy upright carry, legs out. He's too little (13 lb, 11 wks) for anything else, surely? I'm desperate to get him to slingmeet and do some trouble-shooting/shopping around for another slibg, but both DSs seem constantly ill with colds. Sad

ReshapeWhileDamp · 11/03/2011 15:56

sorry, that should be 'within about 3 hours'.

BertieBotts · 11/03/2011 18:39

You could try arms out (or one arm in, one out in a sort of slightly sideways position) if his head control is good. Do you have the crossed over bits on the outside, or the horizontal band? I used to prefer it with the horizontal bit on the outside, I found it easier to adjust :)

Kari-me and bright sparks sling whose name escapes my pregnant brain but is a fleece pouch were fab for me. Ordered both through littlepossums.co.uk, super fast delivery, ordered one at eleven pm and it arrived not the next day but day after. Coori- that was the bright sparks one. Never got on with wilkinet, had to retie it every time. Coori was pop in and go, no complicated tying, great for first few weeks when brain pooped, but actually got the hang of Kari-me pretty quickly.

playthedayaway · 11/03/2011 19:29

Wish I'd read this before buying my sling but I love it! I got a new Baba-Sling from Ebay, £17 and we think it's great! Always hated the old style ones with just 3 standard positions.

Bonners · 13/03/2011 18:55

I had a Tomy carrier that we got second hand and both me and baby HATED it. He had a hairy blue fit every time we put him in it. I researched slings and asked my NCT group their preferences and ended up getting a Moby... It is so much more comfortable and Bubs is a calm and happy baby getting in and out of it. I like it too because in some positions you can tuck their little legs in to be warmer and cuddlier but if they're too hot you can take them out to dangle.

Wrap slings are the business!

Bumperlicious · 13/03/2011 19:05

I have the Kari me which I love but have never been able to breastfeed in it and I too have to take it off completely to feed as it gets in the way. No other complaints though, it's fab.

littlebylittle · 13/03/2011 22:28

I've never been able to feed in any sling- does it need dainty little equipment? If so that could be my problem! If not, what's my problem?
