Ring slings are a good starting point- esp ones that aren't too padded allowing you to get a nice secure hold- most will allow you to tighten the top and bottom edges (or rails) independently.

They have the added flexibility of cradle and upright positions.

I loved using them on my young babies.

I had a Close baby carrier - it's a double ring sling which allows you to put the LO in the cradle hold when they're tiny but upright too when you want to. It goes over both shoulders which I found much comfier than a ring sling.

I have a mei-tai here which I used from birth - it's upright carry only but my DD seemed to prefer this (and reflux was also a consideration for us). It was comfortable for both of us and I wouldn't have been without it.

Baby bjorns are often uncomfortable for babies - something that spread the fabric under their bottoms is much better.

A pouch sling would probably do the trick too - you can put them upright or in a cradle hold. I have a Hotslings adjustable pouch which you can adjust to fit different sized people rather than having to buy in a single size. It means DH can use it (or if I get pg, I can adjust it to fit throughout).

Do try googling 'slingmeet' for your area to try some out - I had a 'celebrity ring sling' from ebay and never got on with it. A friend of mine is very expert on babywearing and I had a go of some - the close baby or mei tei seem an awful lot better, much more comfy.

It made me wish I had a small baby to wearGrin They are very different to a bjorn baby carrier type thing.

Do you mean this one? If so please please do not get it, it looks like one of the bag style slings which are really dangerous. This has more info and also at the end shows safe baby carrier styles which do cradle holds.

I'll find some others on ebay in a similar price range which can do cradle carries if you like?

thanks, gosh that is quite shocking isnt it? I may go for the close baby as it was reccomended by dd's nurse specialist, very expensive tho so may hold out for 2nd hand one. Thanks for all the help esp the warnings Shock

I made the best sling and it was perfect for my tiny DD. I bought 5 meters of material. A cotton/ lycra mix but not with too much stretch. I cut it in half so that it was 0.5 meters in width. This actually left me with two slings.

I then searched on Youtube for how to tie it.

here is the link...otherwise search for 'How to tie a fabric sling'

It cost me £10 is a identical design to some of more costly products and was brilliant. I still use it around the house for naps. In fact I often just leave it on during the day and pop her in and out of it as needed. We've progressed to an Ergo now that she it bigger for out and about but I will be using my home made sling for DC2,3,4,5,6....

That's what I did too CBell :) I got 100% cotton jersey though - the knit makes it stretchy enough that it doesn't sag.

There is a second hand close carrier for sale on the natural mama's forum at the moment. I'm on my phone so can't link at the moment but Google the forum then go to fsot. Shout if you can't find it and ill try to get on to the laptop later to link.

chaosisawayoflife · 09/03/2011 19:59

Here you go. It's red and she wants £30 for it.
