Did you use cloth nappies in hospital?

If so where did you store the dirty ones as I can't imagine they'd let you have a bucket of dirty nappies lying around? If you had to stay in did you keep dirty nappies in the hospital til you went home or did your DP take them home to wash, dry and bring back?

My DH took them home daily to wash and made sure we had enough clean ones for the in-between times. To the amusement of the staff I might add. :oD

I'm a cloth user, but I used disposables while in hospital. I then switched to cloth as soon as I got home.

Was this with your first? I have a feeling DH won't know what to with them if I try to get him to do that!

I did! I just stored them in a plastic bag - no need for a bucket. I had had a CS so my DH did take them home and brought me back clean ones. Much to his amazement the meconium washed out without a trace!!

It was with our first. (Fortunately with #2 we got the home birth we hoped for). We did the same as NapyShedSal and stored them in a plastic bag in hospital. If your DH isn't yet aquainted with the washing machine then now is the perfect time to learn. Take home, rinse if necessary (he could even have a special pair of rubber gloves just for the purpose if he so desires), chuck in machine, wash, dry. Job done.

He can use a washing machine but I'm quite particular about how I wash and dry my nappies Grin

Yup I did, I just used a binliner and sent it home for washing each day (was in 3 days) Then he brought me the nice clean ones back. This was 6 years ago and never a problem seen, some of the midwives were intrigued by it but nostly no one noticed or really seemed to care. DH just chucked the lot in the machine on a normal wash and he'll be doing exactly the same in a fortnight. (only thing I can say is don't use yer bestest cutest nappies just in case.

You can get some really good wetbags with zippers (better for keeping in smells) or with drawstrings - from reasonably priced right up to designer! Also then useful for hanging on doors out of little hands reach, or for out and about or eventually for swim bags.

Whatever you use, pop a coth wipe or old face cloth in the bottom with a couple of drops of tea tree oil on it. Will help combat smells and also is antibacterial etc.

My local maternity unit has cloth on the wards for you to use, they then take it away and launder. Although when I used I go so many comments and interested midwives I think not many can use it

peachybums · 04/03/2011 22:01

Sorry i cant help i used eco disposables in hospital then straight onto washables the second we got home. DP wouldnt hae a clue how to turn the washer on nevermind wash nappies!! I was also told by the midwife that the ward had a policy on washables, they were seen as a health and safety hazzard so they didnt approve of them Angry thought id save hasstle with everything.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 20/03/2011 20:46

I used disposables for the first week then switched when I was a bit more organised.

MollieO · 20/03/2011 20:47

No. Ds was too small for the smallest size I could find. I had to wait for him to grow into them!

sasamaxx · 22/03/2011 12:59

I started with disposibles both times, but think I may start with real nappies right away this time.
A bit worried about the hospital disapproving right enough.

hazeyjane · 22/03/2011 13:05

When I had dd1, the MWs really disapproved of the lady opposite me who was using reusables. However, she carried a bag of dirty nappies around hanging off the crib, which stank, so I could understand in that instance.
