wow! that is big, well done!

i think feeding every 2-3 hours at that age is ok, isnt it - mine is 14 weeks and feeds 3-4 hourly, but goes 8 hours at night.

that said - are you sure that it is food that he is after? my first dd just wanted summat to suck on for comfort and eventually found her thumb. i have given dd2 a dummy.

Congratulations!
3 hours is a fairly long time to go when your belly is that small and your food is liquid and easy to digest, even for a big baby.
My 98th centile 6 month old goes 5 hours at night (and 2 thereafter) and 2, maybe 3 if we have been busy, in the day, but he is bf.
It's not really a great idea for babies that young to sleep for very long periods, they aren't designed that way I'm afraid.
I don't have the ff experience to give advice, there are probably some handy tricks to make night feeds easier on you, but I just wanted to say it will get better, this is very early days, the next couple of months will fly by and you will get through it. Just get the rest you can and dont be hard on yourself.

My FF 14 week old is 98th centile for weight and height and still feeds every 2 hours in the day, goes a bit longer at night. Think you may just have to go with it. Feeding seemed to calm down a bit by around 12 weeks- she found more interesting things to do!

Ooh, one thing I forgot to say was about reinforcing when night and day are happening. He's only just learning about this. For night feeds keep everything dark, if you need the light on to prep a feed, don't have the baby in the same room. Have a small nightlight if you need to see in the bedroom. Don't change him unless he's dirty or very wet.
If he sleeps in your room, make sure he can see you, modelling sleep for him. DS started feeding less at night when I put him in a high cot (not moses basket) as he would wake, see me there and go back to sleep.
Make sure conversely he gets lots of light in the day. I always have the radio on softly during his daytime naps, so night is a very dark, quiet time in contrast.

More than milk at 7 weeks?

lilmamma · 05/03/2011 17:26

I know things have changed but my eldest son,was on baby rice at 6weeks old,as he was a hungry baby,my nan had 14 children and gave me good advice,my son is now a healthy normal weight 28 year old with a young baby of his own.

Your baby is big,and i dont see how, say a 6lb baby can be on the same feed as an 11lb baby,by the time you get to 6 months your baby will be treble the weight of a tiny baby,if you know what i mean.

jaggythistle · 05/03/2011 17:45

The weight of the baby is not what is important in terms of when to offer food.

Sorry that comment was for lilmamma.

Vegasbride, it does sound normal for a very young baby to feed that often. The feeds will most likely start to space out as he grows bigger and so does his wee tummy. Even though he is a bigger baby, his stomach can only hold so much milk.

Liz79 · 05/03/2011 19:06

Regardless of how heavy he is he is still 7wo. That's how young babies feed. Far far too young for anything else. I have 98 centile bf baby, weaned at 24w. It can be done.
