Hello just found out through text (from DS nursery) that it is world book day tomorrow and children if they want can dress up as a book character tomorrow. Great, but only found out 4 hours ago and got home from work 30 mins ago. I have two questions for you. My first one is - is it usual to get such sort notice for things? My second question is what car DS 3 1/2 years go as. It would have to be something that we can use around the house or something easy to make. Any thoughts. First time doing this kind of thing. Think many more to come, but.... Thanks

You really don't need to be worrying about making something at the last minute. Does he have any dressing up costumes? Most costumes can be linked in to a book. Tell us what he has, and we'll find you a book character you can say he is.

CrispyTheCrisp · 02/03/2011 20:12

Oliver twist should be quite easy Grin

PandaG · 02/03/2011 20:12

that short notice is pretty rubbish I have to admit

do you have any toy dinosaurs? if so ordinary clothes and bucket of said toys for Harry and...

wellies, trousers tucked into socks, flat cap and waistcoat for Percy the Park Keeper - add soft toy animals if you have them

fireman outfit - Fireman Sam

Hi Boblina,

Some nurseries/preschools are very organised with things like this however like you I found out earlier today. Ds has chosen to go as Charlie Stinky socks luckily we have a knights costume in the bottom of the dressing up box and I've just made a sword from a shreddies box and tin foil. Didn't think it was a good idea to send him with the sword from the dressing up box Hmm

I'd have a scout round the house and decide what to dress him up as depending on what you can find. Alternatively get out a cereal box, felt pens and make him a mask of one character or another.

My first time too hence the lack of creativity. Hope he enjoys his day. What ever we do I'm guessing they'll rip it off after 10 mins anyway Smile

We have not really bought him any costumes as we thought we could leave the dressing up for nursery. We tend to use my old shoes, hats, bags but not sure that would go down well. He has tools but nothing to go with it, he has a pirate mask but no costume or things to go with it. We have not read him any stories on pirates (that I can think off) does that matter? DS would not wear a mask for long. he does not really like them. Trying to think what else we have, we have a guitar, trumpet and other instruments. Not sure I am being any help here. Shall continue thinking and come back to you.

oooh, oooh, can I thread crash?

am having a similar dilemma.

BUT my problem is: dd2 will only wear a dress, preferably red, and probably spotty. othe rthan Minnie Mouse - any ideas?!

PandaG · 02/03/2011 20:18

brown clothes, ears on a band round head, eyeliner whiskers - mouse from the Gruffalo

black clothes, ears and mabe stuffed tights tail - cat - Jess from Postman Pat or Gobbolino the witches cat.

jonicomelately · 02/03/2011 20:18

Stripy top, spotty scarf and pirate mask?

Boblina · 02/03/2011 20:22

Silverfrong I know it's no spots (although it could be) but how about Red Riding Hood just need a wicker basket and hey presto... What do you think?

It doesn't have to be a book he's read yet. If its not, it might be nice to get the book afterwards to read to him. Re the musical instruments, do you have a toy cat?Tabby McTat might be good, its about a busker and his cat.

silverfrog - Olivia wears red dresses a lot - some spotty

LunarSea · 02/03/2011 20:32

A 3.5 year old boy must surely have a bucket and some toy dinosaurs to go as Harry and the said bucketful?

starfishmummy · 02/03/2011 20:35

Blue trousers (jeans) and jacket if you have one, white shirt and a pile of letters for postman Pat. Obviously a peaked cap and toy cat are useful if you have them.

silverfrog · 02/03/2011 20:38

thanks Smile - I can't believe I didn't think of Little red riding Hood - d'oh! we have multiple baskets around the place (well, we should have - finding them is another thing entirely!)

Olivia would be fab, but we don't own them - dd2 has to take the book in with her... (just for added complication!)

Dawnybabe · 02/03/2011 20:40

I also found out today, when I picked dd up. Hmm

She's already told me she's dressing up in her skeleton costume from Halloween. No idea what story I can link that too but don't really care. They want good costumes, they can tell us a bit bloody earlier.

MamaVoo · 02/03/2011 20:42

I've a similar aged son and only found out about dressing up yesterday.

We've gone for the Very Hungry Caterpillar. I've cut out a few circles of cardboard, got him to paint them and have stuck them to a bit of string so he can wear them hanging down his body. I did another circle for a mask with antennae stuck on, eye and mouth holes and a bit of card taped to the back to hold it on his head.

They're dressing up again in a couple of weeks for red nose day. God knows what we'll do then Confused

Dawnybabe · 02/03/2011 20:45

And we've just had a week off for half term! Why the hell didn't they tell us before half term? We'd have had a week to find something or make something up. [grr]

Schools and nurseries can be really annoying sometimes ! My daughter was told last Monday that her son aged 4 and daughter aged 7 need to go to school tomorrow (Friday) dressed as Alice in Wonderland Characters ! My daughter has no time to make anything and cannot just go out and buy specific costumes ( if she could find any !!)

She is at her wits end because she says all the other Mums will manage it and are really competitive.
I wouldn't dress them up at all ( but then its the kiddies who suffer,..my daughter points out !!)
