Am I being cruel?

DD (18mo) was tired at her usual time of 11.30ish. I BF and put her to bed. She decided not to sleep and has been awake in her cot for an hour. Not crying at all, just making squealing noises and talking. Yesterday she did the same but for about ten minutes then slept for two hours. Is it okay to leave her?

I'd leave her unless she became very distressed. Quiet time is just as good as a nap some days.

God no! My rule is if they aren't crying they are fine!

if shes not crying whys it cruel?if shes chatting to herself she must be quite happy!grown ups dont go to sleep straight away,we all lay there for a bit but we expect babies to go straight to sleep

Thanks. Still happy. At least she's not squealing in my ear and I can make lunch!

If she's happy leave her - we all need time away from the kids who says the kids don't need time away from us.

My 8mo does this all the time, usually in the middle of the night or first thing in the morning whilst she is waiting for me to go in and get her. I think it's really good if they are happy to be left on their own, plus I think if they are in their cots in the quiet and dark then they are at least having a bit of a rest
