Do you give your DC snacks in front of the TV

My DH keeps going on that I need to sit the DC in the dining room for all their snacks and allow them to eat in the living room in front of the TV. My MIL does this so I know where he is coming from, she is OCD when it comes to sticky fingers.

I'm from a much more relaxed background and have found that DC will more likely eat more in front of the TV. Both would live on air given half the chance. I tend to give them fruit, raising or the odd biscuit.

Sometimes I need that 5 minutes peace, I have no help at home and have 2 pre-schoolers. Am I being lazy? I know you do tend to eat more in front of the TV but neither overweight or "solid"!Is it a bad habit?

we allways eat meals at the dinner table, however i'm not that strict about snacks and often let DS have a snack in frot of the TV or computer.

I think your DH is going a bit OTT about it to be honest. i wouldn;t worry if i were you!

Lunch and dinner are at the table, breakfast and snacks are where ever.

Same as above. As long as all meals are eaten at the table, then snacks shouldn't matter.

winnybella · 22/02/2011 14:12

Here all meals are eaten at the table (except, v.v.rarely, a dinner in front of TV for the kids on Fiday or Saturday night), snacks are wherever the kids are. I just put a plate with cheese/fruit/cake on a coffee table and they help themselves.

Francagoestohollywood · 22/02/2011 14:14

Breakfast, lunch, dinner and often snacks at the table. They have the odd snack in front of the tv too, not a big deal.

lia66 · 22/02/2011 14:18

breakfast, lunch, dinner at table, most snacks in sitting room, (much to dh's annoyance but I am with them 90% of the time and it makes my life easier)in front of box.

Occasionally if we have ordered pizza or something then I will spread a blanket down on sitting room floor and havae a carpet picnic, particularly if they are watching a film or something.

I do allow snacks in front of TV - actually wish I didn't as I am constantly hoovering up crumbs etc - however it would be two-faced of me not to allow it when I enjoy slobbing on the sofa with crisps and wine healthy snacks Grin.

Pleased to be moving to a house with wooden floors soon - will that make life easier?

Galdem · 22/02/2011 14:21

They have the odd biscuit in front of the telly, and sometimes chopped up fruit in a bowl. Nothing sticky, spillable or brightly coloured Grin.

All meals at the dinner tavle, though.

lia66 · 22/02/2011 14:34

rag yes it makes life easier, get a floor wipe and kind of wipe/pick up crumbs all in one go. :)

Ragwort · 22/02/2011 14:52

Thanks lia66 - just lost my temper again Blush as DS & friend have dropped Christmas chocolate wrappers all over the floor - at least the chocolates are finished now - hope we move before Easter Grin.

Meals and drinks at the table.
Snacks are allowed in the sitting room but not chocolate that has to be eaten in the kitchen.

How are you supposed to curl up together for a family DVD with popcorn and crisps if the dc's have to eat in the kitchen.

We do put a blanket down first though so I can just shake it out the front door!

CrystalStair · 22/02/2011 15:15

As above - snacks that aren't too messy in the sitting room. Meals and drinks at the table.

PercyPigPie · 22/02/2011 15:16

It's a 'treat supper' when they have a picnic supper in front of the TV (not picnic as such, just a normal supper) and I put an oilskin on the floor to make it more picnic like. I don't think it matters every so often.

Gonzo33 · 22/02/2011 15:53

Breakfast, lunch and dinner at the table. Snacks are allowed in the lounge, but NOT in their rooms. Usually snack is fruit anyway. Oranges at the table though because they are a nightmare with them (ie juice everywhere)

MCos · 23/02/2011 20:23

We have snacks in sitting room, while watching TV. Sometimes it is only way I can get fruit/water into them.
And rarely, they might even have a dinner infront of TV - if they are wrecked tired after hobbies, or if there is something particularly good on TV...

BlueberryPancake · 23/02/2011 20:45

Same! We have breakfast lunch dinner at the table in dining room snacks has to be sitting down at a little low Ikea table we have in the corner of the living room. They don't eat snacks on the sofa and they have to sit down. I just don't like it when they walk around and eat they always leave food bits eerywhere.
