DS refusing to call me Mummy

Everyone and their dog calls me Rachel (which is fair enough as that's my name), but there are only two people in the whole world who call me Mummy (actually only one at the moment, as DD only 0.7!) and I really hate it that DS is choosing not to exercise this right!

Don't know why he's started doing it now. He's known for ages that "my Mummy's name is Rachel, and Luke's Mummy is called Nicky and Eliza's Mummy is called Sarah" etc but he has always understood that while other people call me Rachel, I am Mummy to him.

It may be partly because we've recently spent quite a bit of time staying with family as he hears me called by my name a lot there, whereas at home DH doesn't really use my name or will refer to me as Mummy when talking whilst around the DC.

Further context that could be relevent is that it has been a very emotional time recently with everyone a bit fragile as his grandma (my mum) is very ill and everyone is tense and worried.

Anyway, I want him to stop it! If he says "Rachel" I've just been correcting him and saying, "no, I'm Mummy" but it's falling on deaf ears.

How do I make him start calling me Mummy again?

Totally ignore it, honestly if kids get a reaction it encourages them to continue with the behaviour. Both my DC went through similar phases and DC3 is insisting on calling DH 'mum' atm!

Iv been through this i just dont let it become a big deal! I did like you and explained that he's so special cause he's the only one in the world (or one of two) who gets to call me mummy etc and then dont do what he wants when he calls you Rachel till he changes the sentence again and asks you using mummy instead.... I did this and it totally worked now it wasnt instant cause he wanted to be a big boy and use my proper name thats what he said but when he'd say "secret" can i have a biscuit id just say "mummy" and nothing else cause he knew what i ment after going through it again and again and would continue on whatever i was doing then he'd say mummy can i have a biscuit... Easy :) seriously i did drive me mad too but it did stop...

My nieces called their mum and dad by their first names until they were 9 and 7. Even now they still refer to them by first names sometimes. If you want to make a change, then make it now, or he won't stop for a long time.

Saying that - all my nieces and nephews call me by my first name as I was the youngest aunt, so everyone called me by my first name - but I have been very strict with my daughter, and she only ever calls me mummy...or "mama" as she learnt from Bambi, much to my dismay

Thanks everyone for replying.

Memoo - I've been ignoring it but if anything it seems to be increasing! Maybe I just have to ride it out, eh?

secretwishes - Thanks, I'm going to try your suggestion today...fingers crossed!

homeboys - he's only 2.11, which is still ok to use "Mummy" isn't it? His peers nearly all use "Mummy".

milkyway - That's what I'm afraid of! How were you strict with your DD? What did you do when she called you Milkyway?

My DD (also 2) does exactly this, she went through a phase a few months ago where she called DH by his first name, but it wore off and then she started it with me Hmm

Anyway, I am trying to either ignore or correct her when she does it!

I'm sure it will wear off.

IMO "mummy" is fine until they are about 10... or longer if they are happy to do so! I love being "mummy" !

My ds goes through phases. Sometimes I'm mum othertimes he calls me by my first name and occasionally by the nickname my mum and dad call me. And very very occasionally ( but only ever inprivate he calls me mummy) he's nearly 9 and has been doing it on and off for years, even occasionally calling his grandparents by their first names.
I think he does it to be mischievous most of the time, other times I think he does it because it makes him feel a bit grown up, especially if we have been spending alot of time round other adults.

I will never forget the day my parents told my DBrother that he should no longer call our Dad "Daddy". He was probably about 10.

We had all switched mostly to "mum" but DF was still "Daddy". Ever since that day, he hasn't called him anything.

My Dsis and I still call our dad "Daddy" as it's "ok for girls" but how weird must it be to not have a name for your father? There's no consistency in their birthday cards to him, either... sometimes "Pa" sometimes "Father" sometimes "Dad"... I feel very Sad for him, really!

slight hijack, sorry, OP!

LaydeeC · 22/02/2011 21:25

my son went through a phase of calling me by my first name. It stopped and he went back to calling me mummy.
Now he's a teen, it is either mum or my first name. I don't really mind as, after all, his friends call me by my first name Smile
My dtr at 11 calls me either mum or mummy (and her dad, dad or daddy). I guess that will revert just to mum/dad soon. Funny though, whilst it sounds perfectly normal for my son to call me by my first name, it would be really odd if my dtr did so Confused

MammyG · 22/02/2011 21:30

My DS did this too when he was two. He just wanted to be like everyone else I think but I had a chat and said that only two people could call me mom and it was very important to me. He tested a bit but I would just ignore what he asked and would give a little cough and he would correct himself and say mom. I would then beam at him and answer! It didnt last long after that. That said he calls me everything from Mama to mam. I let him at it until he finds what works for him.

mumofoliver · 23/02/2011 18:29

My DS did that at a similar age - he thought it was v funny and cheeky. I didn't make a big thing of it and he went off it after a few weeks. He soon after went on to saying "mum" rather than "mummy" - again for a reaction. Now he says a mixture of both,
