AS it says on the tin-
Im inclined to go for washable nappies when my little bean is born- I have heard very good and bad stories and need to know a little more?

I have looked a the newer makes in Mothercare- all seem very well designed, soft, with washable inners, or biodegradable liners..

any thoughts???

I know some accidents will be ineveitable- but did you suffer any major probs/leakage with them??

there's a nappys section somewhere on mn - they're the real experts! I used them for years and they were great - much better than dispies that do leak all the time, esp with newborns. but at the time at least, mothercare only sold crap versions and you could get much much better nappies through online nappy websites. i used totsbots, motherease wraps, ellas house for night time, and some 'bamboo' (note these are not really made of bamboo but something that started life as bamboo but is turned into something resembling viscose) nappies - all were great

Wow- they leak a lot less. That is interesting.

Yeah, totsbots rings a bell. I think they may have been to ones I was looking at.

They did impress me actually, when they gave a demonstration and gave me a form for money back at local council.

Great, thanks ladies.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/nappies_potty_training_etc

this is the topic area for nappies on mn - you can found out a million billion things more about types of nappies on there and everything to do with how to wash them etc. I found it invaluable over the years. don't rush to commit to one type of nappy or wrap - you could try a few and see how you go. Also well worth looking at buying either second hand or 'good as new' - a lot of people buy a whole system then don't use them and sell them on

We use mother ease one size for the toddler with motherease airflow wraps. They have a pop in booster and I just cut up an old fleece blanket to use as liners. He's a heavy wetter and have had no leaks yet at all. I don't even need to boost them for nighttimes.

When the 2nd boy was born we first used a folded muslin with a nappi nippa and airflow wrap. We used these for about 8weeks and it was easy and cheap. Just bulk bought a load of muslins. After that we used a mixture of Tots Bots stretchy bamboozles which I LOVE and Tots Bots fluffles with the airflow wraps.

He's 5months now and just growing out of the Tots Bots so he's going into the Motherease one size.

I keep a lidded bucket with mesh bag in the bathroom, chuck all the nappies and wipes in there and throw the whole bag in the machine once it's full. Easy peasy.

If you look on eBay, there is a lady there who sells tots bots nappies from the 2nd's factory. They are much cheaper and I still can't actually see what is wrong with them.

Have used "old fashion Terries" on 4 of mine and will still be using them on the next one [old dinosaur smiley!)

MonkeyandParrot · 20/02/2011 13:32

I also find that terries leak less than disposables. Take a look on usednappy.com as it works out even cheaper to buy second hand but i would recomend getting just one of each type to play with and see what babs like when babs is born. DD1 for example has very sensitive skin and it took a few trials before I found motherease birth to potty with airflow wraps which suits us both. I got a full nappy set from birth to potty for £50 and have used them on both DDs - wonder how much I've saved overall?

It seems to really vary by the shape of your baby what style works best - I gave it a go because I was given a few washables, and 2.5 years later I'm a total convert! Ds demanding his favourite coloured nappies was something I never worried about initially!

I found ds got rash if in disposables consecutively, whereas never has with washables. I do have plenty of drying space so never use the dryer, which means I've definitely saved money as all my nappies have been second-hand - except one which nursery lost when an agency person threw it away...

I toss ds's clothes in with nappies if they aren't too icky, so it's only about 1 extra wash a week.

YellowCecil · 20/02/2011 18:25

I'm using muslins on my 5 week old and so far they are brilliant. I have some terries for when she gets bigger but at the moment the muslins aren't too bulky and are surprisingly absorbant. We've used disposables when out and about and at night (as I am too cack handed at 5am to cope with folding!) and they definately leak more and need to be more vigilant about changing re nappy rash.

As a warning they did take longer to get the hang of than the disposables so practice before hand and be patient with yourself if a nappy change takes a long time to start with - you'll be a pro in no time!

Greeninkmama · 20/02/2011 22:05

I started with traditional terries (with a motherease wrap) and then went on to the motherease ones. Never had any leakage that I can remember and neither of my kids had nappy rash. I did use disposables at night and if we were out for the day.

I use tots bots bamboozles. They're really good.

For cloth nappy advice I suggest Google the nappy lady. If you use their advice service (free) you get a permanent shop discount. Her YouTube demos are great too.
