How do you make your baby laugh?

We've only really been able to do it three or four times in our 5 month old DS's life, all in the last two or three weeks. When its happened its been an absolute delight, but it seems a rarity. We must have caught him when he was in a particularly good mood, but every time its been something different (raspberries on his neck, playing peep oh, and talking to him in a funny voice saying boo boo boo boo... Blush

The rest of the time, he's an extremely contented baby and so easy to make smile. But other babies his age seem to laugh loads! Has anybody got any suggestions?

The main thing my DD likes is being thrown around!!! Very vigorously, she thinks that's hilarious.

Other strange things include - mad manic dancing in front of her, pretending to have hiccups, and shaking the duvet?!? Random I know.

Oh she also used to laugh at me and DH whenever we got animated about something, which was funny - she clearly thought we were a bit mental!!

Ds2 is a very content smiley baby but was hard to make laugh at 5 months.
The dc's could manage it, first goog propr giggle was when he seen dd skipping so the dc's discovered jumping up and down in front of him made him laugh, still does.

He like things that are quite vigorous like that but not at 8 months he is much easier to laugh than he was 3 months ago so it does happen more and easier eventually.

We throw pillows on dd Blush that was what I did the first time she laughed! Now I have to tickle her very hard btu she isn't a massive giggler

My 6 month old ds has an obsession with the cat...he laughs just looking at her and now he can crawl he follows her roun the room trying to grab her.

He also laughs when you make squeaky toys squeak and when you sing "I went to the animal fair".

Oh and if he sneezes we always say "atishoo" afterwards and I think because we have done this since he was born it always makes him laugh.

Don't worry, our DD didn't laugh much at 5 months, but it soon built up and she laughs loads now (13 months).

Silly faces and silly noises worked best at that age. They don't usually have a very sophisticated sense of humour!!

Roo83 · 19/02/2011 14:50

My dd like raspberrys on her tummy, tickles under chin, laughs for no reason when ds laughs to. Don't worry though, each Childs different....my ds wasn't a particuarly smiley baby but is now a very chatty, smiley and giggly nearly 3yr old

chickinlickin · 19/02/2011 18:33

thank you everyone, will try some of those suggestions (perhaps not the pillow one..just yet anyway!) I wasn't really worrying, just desperately wanting more of the giggles!

Pretend to sneeze "ah-ah-aahh-ah- aaahh-TISHOOO"
several times. I have never met a baby who doesn't find that funny. Grin

Pterosaur · 19/02/2011 18:46

My DD1 used to crack up when I did 'Head, shoulders, knees and toes', very fast with all the actions [knackered emoticon], but what she really loved was DH 'flying' her round the room (beware what you may be unleashing - my mother, who used to look on with horror at the flying, reckons it's led directly to now 13 y-o DD's passion for the high jump and her ambition to be a champion pole vaulter).

DD2 mainly laughed at DD1. Absolutely detested her father's attempts to fly her, much to his disappointment.

DD1 was and is much more giggly than DD2 - they are definitely all different.

Mine loves it when I jump up and down in front of her, as well as when I make funny noises against her tummy. She always giggles when we get her out of the bath and I sing silly songs to her while I get her dry. She used to laugh when I bounced her on my knee, but that only gets smiles these days. She also used to laugh at "boo boo" noises and at peekaboo, but those too, have been relegated to smiles only!

Its fun finding new things to make them laugh, I try to get her to giggle at least a couple of times a day, which means I spend a lot of time making funny faces and dancing about like a loon in my kitchen while she watches from the bumbo bemused.

Exaggerated inhale - pause with mouth open - lips together and exhale raspberry style. Varying the length of the pause makes it hilarious to DS.

chickinlickin · 20/02/2011 12:51

Asinine it worked!! That's so funny, he loved it!! How weird that all babies laugh at that one? Thank you:)

I kiss her chin/jaw while making exaggerated kissing noises...normally works!

She is just learning to kiss too which is very cute. (6 months.)

NinkyNonker · 20/02/2011 20:19

Or jumping her up and down on my knee...

Ozziegirly · 21/02/2011 05:50

My nearly 6 month old DS also laughs loads at fake sneezes! (not real ones though - odd). And having his thighs squidged and going "squidgesquidgesquidge". Plus when I lie on my back and have him sit up on my tummy so he's higher up than me and he's looking down at me. He loves that.

Also loves being held on DH's shoulders and "horseyed" around. Anything exaggerated he will laugh at so I will say "pppppeeeeeeaaassss" in a high pitched voice and he screams with laughter.

He also laughs almost constantly when he's in the highchair and is being fed - I make up songs like "Peas are good peas are good...the peas are very good" to "Ebeneezer Goode" and he laughs at my dreadful singing.

He is a very laughy boy though, it doesn't take much.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 21/02/2011 05:58

I was going to say pretend to sneeze, too. That was how we elicited our first laughs.

Ozzie, I can't believe he's almost six months old. Wasn't he born, like, last week?

MrsBonkers · 21/02/2011 07:14

7 month old DD loves:

  • being held upside down
  • bouncing her on my knee pretnding she's riding a horse
  • singing 'handsup, baby hands up' whilst moving her hands up above her head
  • mad dancing in front of her (think 'dad dancing at wedding') the twist is a favourite!!
  • eating her toes making loud munching noises
  • facinated by my teeth

So, basically anything that makes me look ridiculous is a winner with her!

Ozziegirly · 21/02/2011 09:00

Tortoise! Hello! How the devil are you?

Yes, he's 6 months on Friday - I can't believe it either. He's wonderful, such a fantastic happy little fellow who I love SO much I can hardly bear it sometimes.

HotGiggity · 21/02/2011 09:36

DS loves it if you look away and then look back pulling a 'Blue Steel'.

Smelling his feet and telling him their stinky (and pulling a face)

Snuffling his tummy and pretending to eat him

Laughing at him

A cat, just being near him, especially if they look at him

Being in the bath

Breathing in dramatically and going 'Bah bah bah bah' in quick sucession

Cosmosis · 21/02/2011 14:22

squeezing his tummy works well, but best is just laughing yourself, then he joins in, then you laugh cos he's laughing and it just carries on from there Grin

Udderly · 21/02/2011 22:33

Asisine, kudos for the Atishoo!! Hours of fun we had today as a result!!

Asinine · 21/02/2011 22:52

udderly glad you had fun- this thread is making me broody....Envy when dcs get older those jokes don't work any more. Sad how do you make a 12 year old laugh? Watch black adder reruns Grin
