How often do you check on baby at night?

My 5 month old goes to bed in his own room at 7pm - and I check on him a couple of times between then and when I go to bed - just wondered what you do? As sometimes when I check on him it disturbs him and he wakes up. I do have a monitor with a movement sensor etc...and often hear him on the monitor whilst I'm awake too.

My DD (5 months) is still in our room. Once she is down (7ish) I rarely check on her and we go to bed about 10pm. We have a monitor though.

I have a video monitor - it's an absolute Godsend. My DD is 16 weeks old and I have it next to me as soon as she goes to bed, and keep it on all night.
It might seem a bit OTT to some but it's hugely reassuring for me and I know I'd be constantly checking without it. That's just me. Smile

DS (4 months) goes to bed at 7.30 and we check once at about 9. He's been in his own room since 2 months and we don't have a monitor but just leave doors open.

Boy is 22 weeks. He goes to bed at 6.30-7pm, we don't check on him at all til he asks for a feed at 10ish. we have a monitor with movement sensor.

redstripeyelephant · 18/02/2011 21:27

both DDs (2.10 and 8 months) go to bed at 8ish, and I always have a peek in on them before we go to bed at around 11, can't sleep unless I do! Also DD1 sometimes has twisted herself around in bed or is hanging off the edge so I have to gently lie her back on the pillow.

DD2 only started sleeping through the night recently so I have had the odd 3am panic when I wake up and obsessively press the monitor against my ear to check if she's still breathing!

ipredicttrouble · 18/02/2011 22:33

I don't Smile

DD is 7 months old and goes down in her own room at approx 7.30pm every night. The monitor is always on in the lounge downstairs but if we don't hear from her then we just leave her to her sleeping. We always pop our head round the door when we go up to bed (usally 10pm ish) and then that's it til morning.

MoonUnitAlpha · 18/02/2011 22:37

Mine is 6 months - maybe check on him once in the evening and then at 11pm when he has a feed. Then hopefully don't see him til the morning Grin

bessie26 · 18/02/2011 22:55

DD had a movement sensor when she was younger, but I still popped my head round the door to check on her before I went to bed. She's in a toddler bed now and I still do it. It's partly so I can check she or an essential teddy aren't about to fall out of bed, but I just like to see her sleeping - she looks so cute, even when she's snoring!!

threefeethighandrising · 18/02/2011 23:02

I used to check on DS whenever I thought of it, even if it seemed a bit nuts! I thought I'd rather just go with my instincts than fight them.

varyingdegreesofdeafness · 18/02/2011 23:08

dd 4, ds 2, dh checks on them about 4 times!! I forget to, i'm so knackered after bedtime (dh gets home after they have gone to bedand, quite often i'm so tired if they have woken crying, dh has woken and gone to see to them and i haven't heard them and slept through t all! Blush

notremotelyintofootie · 18/02/2011 23:31

Dh used to want me to check every 2o mins even though we had a monitor! Dd is now 15 months and he wants to check every 30-45 mins but I leave it an hour or so and just before I go to bed, she still wakes for a feed around 12 and 3/4 though... Dh is a worrier!

sunndydays · 19/02/2011 13:04

DD sleeps 6:30 until 7/8 and we just look in her room once before we go into bed, we have done this since she was sleeping through at 15 weeks

InmaculadaConcepcion · 19/02/2011 14:01

It depends.

If DD has been fidgeting and chatting to herself after being put down, I may stick my ear to the crack in the door once it's gone quiet just to reassure myself she's stopped fidgeting and has really fallen asleep.

I usually have a quiet listen at the door just before I go to bed myself - I can generally hear her breathing without going in.
Or if it's a chilly night, I creep inside and pop a light blanket over her as I know she can get a bit cold once the temperature drops.

That's it until she wakes me up, which she invariably does a few hours later.

DD is just short of 13 months.

BeenBeta · 19/02/2011 14:05

I check before we go to bed that they are OK.

The babies are nearly 9 and 11 now and haven't had a baby monitor since age 4 and 2 but we have a friend who still has a baby monitor for her son at age 7.

Tweetinat · 19/02/2011 16:42

Another one here who's never checked in on DS once he's gone down for the night. I have occassionally put the monitor on highest sensitivity to hear him breathing but never gone into his room.

drivingmisscrazy · 19/02/2011 16:47

DD is now 2; rarely unless she's unwell (e.g. to make sure she isn't too hot etc). We have no monitor either - she was inclined to wake, and is so tricky to settle back that we decided that no noise was good noise, IYSWIM!

She is still in cot and sleeping bag, so this might change when we finally pluck up the courage to tackle the big girl bed...

Hatescolds · 19/02/2011 20:57

DD1 we check at our bedtime so only once.

dd2 7 months I 'check' on frequently as she wakes up most of the night!

littlebylittle · 19/02/2011 21:10

Check on them both at my bedtime, but only because I like watching them when they're asleep! They are five and two though.
