If you have a 12ish year old daughter who wears a bra..

Would you allow her to wear a padded one?

12 year old DD is trying to convince me to buy her a padded bra. I have refused and she has done the whole "but all my friends have them" routine.

I totally refuse to believe this is the case. Surely nobody lets a 12yo wear a padded bra?

DD has been wearing a bra for a year. She actually probably needs to be measured for a more accurate size now, but she is not keen. She would die rather than wear a padded bra - she doesn't want to look like that and I'm more than happy for her not to have one.

I need to get DD measured too, was thinking of taking her to M&S at the weekend.

My friends 11yr old is just developing and wears a padded bra as it protects her very tender developing breasts- I was a bit Shock at first but it made good sense when she explained.

Quite a few 12 year olds seem to wear padded bras based on what the dds have said in teh past.

3littlefrogs · 16/02/2011 19:22

Teen bras are not "padded" in the way that adult bras are. They have a very thin layer of padding that is soft, comfortable, protects very tender developing breast tissue, and also stops nipples being visible through school blouses.

DD has a few from M&S angel range and they are really nice.

Memoo · 16/02/2011 19:25

I've seen those ones on the website 3littlefrogs, couldn't work out how padded they were.

The ones that are "padded" like Tshirt bras - ie they are supposed to be smooth and protective and also make the nipple not visible through a blouse or whatever would be fine. Not ones where you actually stick a pad into a pocket.

Memoo · 16/02/2011 19:27

I wonder if thats what she means then, she said padded to me but maybe I've misunderstood what she meant. tbh I'd still have her in the all in one vests with poppers at the bottom, keep her warm! Grin

There are few things more embarrassing than being 12 and having your nipples show through your school blouse. (IMO)

M & S do some lovely teen bras and some are slightly "padded". DD loves them because she says she doesn't jiggle about in them! They are obv designed for this age group and not padded in the way some ladies ones are. Nor are they underwired as that is a def no no at that age

Kbear · 17/02/2011 21:39

I buy DD M&S bras that are slightly padded but not underwired so you can't see nipples though the bra. £12.99 for two I think, one white one grey, or one white one black. She is twelve but not much boobage yet, just her dignity when changing in PE!

whatacharmer · 17/02/2011 21:46

I would. Mostly because they are more comfortable and hide your nipples at school but also because I was the girl in the greying vest when all my friends had nice pretty feminine underwear. My first bra was an E cup because my mother thought children shouldn't be concerned about such things. Its bollocks that you should have to be a grown up to have nice underwear, bras can be nice without being peephole age innapropriate.
