Hi there,
anyone out there doing an OU degree in psychology? I'm half way through, have done DSE212, ED209 and am on DD307 (social psych). Just found out how hard it is to get training in Clinical Psych so having a big re-think about how i can earn a crust with a BSc in psychology....

I was/am planning the same, but have just had a major rethink because I realised I would be in my 50s before I would qualify to be an Ed Psych.

Bugger.

I'm just on DD101, and wondering WTF to do now. I do wonder if I should just continue and see if anything else occurs in the process, or go for an Open, filled with some of the other subject I like the look of, but don't need for BPS registration.

No help at all to you I'm afraid, but maybe someone else will have a brilliant idea.

TheFallenMadonna · 16/02/2011 13:48

I did it. Just for fun really. Teach it now in addition to my other subject. Loved it!

Very, very competitive to get onto postgrad training courses. Did toy with the idea of occupational psychology, but am deeply sceptical about psychometrics, so I don;t think I'd be very good at it Grin

Have you considered teaching? You might need to rethink the subject but you could count those courses towards lots of degrees or an open degree as you mentioned.

The idea of teaching fills me with dread. I'd much rather work with the mentally ill than 30 rowdy schoolchildren. Though that is a lot more practical with all the term time holidays.

It's so competitive that if you aren't getting grade 1's in everything I'd re-think your options.

readinginbed · 17/02/2011 09:58

Thanks for the advice. I'm scraping firsts usually which is enough to keep my hopes up, which is maybe not a good thing! DO you think working in a psychiatric hospital as a support worker will be relevant experience?

I worked as a support worker during my psychology Bsc and it was great experience! Unfortunately you can't just walk ibtoba job using psychology with just the Bsc you will need some form of post grad training too... Even teaching will need the pgce.... Have a look at the careers/jobs section on the bps website it has some great advice!

I am doing DD307

Am supposed to be writing TMA right now. sigh

Normantebbit · 22/02/2011 17:07

And readinginbed

My brain has been pulverised by the first TMA. Oh my God.

mmsmum · 23/02/2011 10:00

I have been thinking about doing the two level 3 psyc. courses (I've got 2 years to go though) Are they good courses to do?

I've looked superficially at BPS accreditation etc. for the Bsc (I'm not doing it, just nosy) and noticed that you need a postgrad. course for lots of things, but it is an excellent qualification so I'm sure there must be loads of options

minipen · 28/02/2011 22:38

Another one here for DD307, just finished first TMA, roll on November I keep thinking!

Normantebbit · 28/02/2011 22:42

Oh God have you finished? I've still got 200 words to go, then a little redrafting and then references.

But I am mumsnetting and thinking that I have tomorrow night too. I am a terrible procrastinator, perhaps I should have some psychoanalysis.

CatPower · 09/03/2011 10:44

Hi all, I'm in the middle of DSE212 and supposed to be working on TMA04 right now, but instead I'm on here hunting for moral support! I did DD101 last year and loved it, and am working toward B07 (BSc Psychology).

docket · 09/03/2011 10:50

I'm doing ED209 at the moment and loving it. I've done a few other modules and will need to do the Biology of the Brain (ugh) and the 2 level 3 ones to get the degree. Am now flapping about what I'll actually do with it, I agree it seems a very competitive field. Darlene, do you really think that if you don't get a first then rethink (or do you mean for Clinical?)

NormanTebbit · 09/03/2011 12:19

I spoke to a careers adviser at the OU who was positive about clinical psychology but yes it is very competitive, and yes it is a long road. The expectation is that you will have to apply 2-3 timesbefore gaining a position to train and that in that time you will be building experience.

I am hoping to teach psychology along with English and will be doing a pgde next year if all goes to plan.

The thought makes me feel a bit ill though after reading about teachers workload on here.

Another option is occupational therapy although you have to do an MSc

Aurora13 · 29/03/2011 19:53

hi!

I have just started DD101!! I have sent my 2nd essay! AHH love it but hard work to keep up!!

ElenStone · 30/03/2011 03:49

I've just started SD226 biological psychology, after completing DSE212, DZX222 and ED209 (except for the ED209 exam which I had to defer until next month and so, am in a complete panic about!)

From what I've read, a first gives you a better chance but you can get places with a 2:1 and the more experience you have, the more likely that is. Do you have any idea where you'd apply for the Clinical psych PHd?
