too large for cloth nappies - help!

DS is 27 months and I'm expecting no.2 at Xmas. He's 38lb and the only nappies to fit him now are terries (barely, and only last max of 2 hours before being soaked) and Toddlerease which are getting really really low in the rise now so not great at containing poos!

I really don't reckon he will potty train yet, no signs and I know he's still pretty young. My options as I see them are:

  1. Potty train and hope it's not even more of a hassle with new baby coming soon changing DS's wet trousers, constantly taking to loo etc (that's what a friend told me it might me like). Sounds like it's easier to leave them in nappies till baby is a little older.
  2. Buy some more toddlerease nappies (only got 8 at the mo), potty train next spring when he's just over 2 and a half
  3. Change to disposables which would be easier all round, especially with new baby coming, and fit him better. Tempting, but I'm not keen on the wasted money on disposables nor the fact that I'd just rather keep him in cloth, but then he's seemingly too big and getting bigger rapidly....!

What would you do? I'm stumped!

I used to pad the living daylights out of terry nappies, using two at night, and use a basic triangle folding method with a pin at each side.
Huge though. I remember watching her climb up the slide ladder with her huge nappy, poor love.
Have you started potty training?

leggymamba · 14/10/2005 19:22

I've just potty trained dd (27 months) had one week of lots of accidents but that seemed to get her to realise that the idea was to use the potty - everytime she got a hit she got a sticker (house currently plastered with them!).

I've got ds (5 mnths) - wouldn't like to have tried to potty train with him less than 3 months as was completely brain dead for at least the first 12 weeks! You should definately have cracked potty training before christmas or if you chose to leave it - wait until late spring!

Good luck with everything (enjoy your sleep while you can!!!!!!)

Nope, haven't started potty training yet as not sure whether to leave it until after baby is born so make it easier all round.

Two terries?! Do you mean just one on top of the other (which wouldn't fit ds as one barely fits at the moment), or two kind of joined onto each other? Could only do that at night time anyway.

WAHM's nappies are a good suggestion. Not sure about XL Tots, will have a look at them. Have small and medium ones already and never really liked them much, but if they're high in the rise and big enough to contain ds's wees then they'd be perfect!

dd2 was using size 3 tots at 30lb+ at one yr old. she went out of them to potty training at 40lb. i used to place a size 2 inside it as well to boost at night. ised with XL ME wraps and they were great.

celandine · 14/10/2005 22:49

Well, ds only 2lb off 40lb so not sure how long tots size 3 would last. Just been reading about Nappy Nation XL, or Bumhuggers Toddler. They sound good, particularly the Nappy Nation being quick to dry as we've no tumble-drier. Has anyone used these and can say about height of rise?

Looking at Stuffienappies, thanks.

The size 3 Tots really are big, but would be an expensive outlay if you don't need them for long, and they don't often come up 2nd hand. If you were worried about it not fitting too well, you could boost on the outside (between nappy and wrap) rather than the inside. I've got a few Tots that are a bit thin, and I just pad fold a terry between the nappy and wrap for nighttime.

What about trying some microfibre cloths as extra boosters. Never tried them myself, but I've heard that people who use stuffable nappies use them.
