I have bambinex teddies for my bab for day - lovely and soft; bambinex bamboos for night - but these I can rarely get soft unless tumble dry big time - what am I doing wrong - is there some sort of hard water issue, do they need special detergent?

The teddies are microfibre which stays soft and fluffy regardless of water conditions. The bamboo ones being a natural fibre will be like any fabric washed without fabric conditioner and feel a little crunchy.

few things you can try to combat it:

There are a few things you can try out to help soften them though:

  • Once they are dried, try bashing them together and agitating them with your hands, this fluffs up the pile and can have quite an effect on them,
  • Have heard good things about ecover fabric softner, lots of US sites rave about it as good for softening crunchy nappies. Looks as if ecover, being made with plant extract stuff, doesnt coat the fibres of a nappy and cause them to repel like most standard conditioners do. I have never tried this, so really cant vouch for it. If you do use it then you may find you want to do a strip wash thing every so often to make sure the nappies stay absorbant and you don't get build up.
  • If you have and are happy to use a tumble drier, tumble them for 10 mins before hanging them to dry.

Also you can try putting a fleece liner inside them, so that something soft is next to bub's skin. Helps keep them drier too, as the fleece acts as water repellent (lets the wee through but resists it coming back unless nappy is saturated and is useful for dealing with the solids too Wink

White vinegar in the softer draw will soften them quite a bit.

Fleece liners are always a Good Thing. But, never put an extra a fleece liner to a fleece lined nappy - a double layer of fleece creates a waterproof layer and they'll just leak horribly.

Vinegar is not recommended with bamboo though, or bicarb. Ok for occassional strip wash but wouldn't use regularly as can damage the fibres.

Meh, never heard that before! Used vinegar on my bamboozles at most washes over 2 DC and they're just fine. Would certainly be good for a third round.

To be honest most manufacturers warn against just about everything on their nappies - just to be on the safe side I reckon. Vinegar though is an acid, so if used too much, and at temperature, it can corrode the fibres in the nappies. I think some of it is to do with the mineral content of local water too, which is why some can get away with it and some don't.

Also new style bamboozles are strechier and have more elastic added to them, whereas the older ones didn't and I would reckon it is the elastic which is most affected. Tots do specifically warn against it, as do a lot of others if you google.

yy vinegar is not good for elastic. We were alright but I suppose there is some element of risk / luck. Mine were bought in 7 probably old style.
