Too young for walker?

sorry guys, second question for the day.

my just turned 5 month old is walking everywhere in his walker

he loves it and it gives him his independance to scoot round after his sister

but.... my worry is, i know he is young for this but is he too young???? he's very mature for age (if that doesnt sound silly)

too young how?

think walkers are less popular now than they were because of concerns that they discourage weight-bearing, but don't know if that's actually true .

As long as there's no danger of falling down stairs or into fires, it should be ok I would have thought.

Don't like putting a spoiler on things but you might want to read this You'd definitely be able to get more stuff on this if you google.

If you dont leave him in it too long, he sits well in it, and he does plenty of other activities. Also that is also in a safe environment i dont see a problem personally.

I know kids who have used them and been fine. they definitely are more of a problem because babies love them and it gives mums a bit of peace so sometimes they get overused. Out of interest I did a google and found lots of anti stuff but this this , a more cynical view of the research. The interesting part is the bit about babies using them not crawling which is an important thing for brain development and coordination.

northender · 14/10/2005 14:38

one this would've been fine!!

gravity · 14/10/2005 15:36

the crawling bit was my main issue

he loves his walker........

no fires...... reverse cycle air con

only stairs....... are up (he is in downstairs section of our loungeroom)

northender, funny you say that, we thought our dd would never crawl but after a week spent away from her beloved walker she was off and there's no stopping her now. She was 12mths.

gravity · 14/10/2005 17:47

was she 12 months when she started?

my ds is only 5 months. i hope i don't affect him crawling>...

I mean this nicely, but why have a walker? Why not just let them get about in their own way, in their own time?

spookylips · 14/10/2005 18:02

i bought a walker when baba was 4 months old (as its got stoppers on them so she cannot walk but just sit in it) but she was too strong on her legs as she was dragging it around so i left it for another month which she was 6 mths and she loves it

gravity · 14/10/2005 18:03

he was origianlly just sitting in his walker, for meals etc. not for along time

but i was away for a week.

ds & dd were with mum in law while i was away.

when i returned he had learnt to walk around everywhere. not even walk. he runs at times.

he loves it now - he is so independant.

gravity, i'd be some of the others on this , and 5mths is a bit young, there has been lots of publicity albeit negative about their use with babies. their hips/pelvic area isnt developed enough for the weight to bear

as beansprout said why not let him go himself?

gravity · 14/10/2005 18:07

that was my worry.his little developing bod

think shall prise him out of it for a little bit (i think he will scream at me for a few days )

will encourage crawling

thanks heaps ladies xxxxxxx

my mum wants to buy my daughter one for christmas, I don't want one.

she thinks I'm mean

I think she's old fashioned!

Seona1973 · 15/10/2005 19:39

I used to put dd up in hers from about 5 months old - only for short periods of time (up to 20 mins) and not more than once/twice a day. It gave her a different perspective i.e. upright instead of flat on her back/tummy. She crawled by 7 months and walked at 11 months so it never hampered her development. If you use them responsibly and dont have them in them all day/for hours at a time I dont see what harm they could do.
