grobags and blankets...

i have a nice 1 tog grobag for 4-month-old DS (made of towelling with a cotton liner - no padding) which i'd like to start using.

the bedroom room is 17 or 18 degrees and up till now he's had a sheet and two blankets and seems warm enough and not too hot in bed.

so i think he'd need the grobag plus a blanket - but various sites on the web say don't use a grobag with a blanket. why not? if it is well tucked in at the sides of the mattress and he can't snuggle under it / pull it up over his face, can't i use the grobag with 1 blanket on top?

i know i could get a warmer grobag, but they're expensive...

NB i've tried grobag's site but not much enlightened.

Well, I know grobag say not to use with a blanket but I suspect that's just for their liability insurance.

The grobag nursery thermometers say that if the room is 18C either a towelling grobag (i.e. 1 tog) or a quilted one (2.5 tog) can be used so you don't necessarily have to put any more layers on. Baby should be dressed in a bodysuit and pyjama top underneath. You could always dress in vest and something with legs to keep him cosier on cold nights.

I've always used sheets/blankets on top if its a thin grobag like yours. As long as its tucked in and child is at bottom of cot should be fine.

DS is in a 2.5 tog grobag tonight, plus sleepsuit. His room's 21 degrees. He wakes up all the time cold if he's dressed any less warmly.

He'll be in a vest plus sleepsuit plus 2.5 tog sleeping bag when it's properly cold. He's 18mo and a real wriggler in bed - turns full circles in the night, so blankets just no good.

I suppose what I'm saying is if your DS is happy to sleep with fewer bedclothes, then your 1 tog grobag plus blanket is fine - but if he wakes up cold, either put more clothes underneath or get a warmer grobag (apparently Asda do them for a tenner?).

I think TKMAX dot hem cheaply too

hunkerpumpkin · 13/10/2005 22:18

Don't like the ones with dotty hems. Oh, I see what you mean

laligo · 13/10/2005 22:31

thanks all

i might get a warmer one - it's just that i've got this one, it's lovely, we haven't used it yet and by the time ds needs a summer weight one again he'll be too big for it!

have also seen nice ones at H&M, so could be time for more shopping.

the tag on the one my chargesfamily have just bought says - less than 2.5 tog wich is equivelant to a sheet and 2 blankets

laligo · 13/10/2005 22:59

so -

2.5 tog = a sheet and two blankets

so if i use 1 tog with one blanket, would that roughly equal 2.5 tog?

(sorry to mither on about this...)

Can't advise about adding extra bedding - gave up on blankets ages ago due to wriggly babies. Extra layers on baby are best IMO. ds2 is in 1 tog grobag with long sleeve, long leg PJs at the mo (no vest) and he is OK, but both mine have been warm babies. You could get fleece sleepsuits or maybe put him in a vest, sleepsuit and PJ top if he's cold.

Or you could get a thicker grobag (lots on ebay for quite good prices) for colder nights.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 14/10/2005 11:01

Jess wears long sleeve long leg pj's in a 1 tog sleeping bag and is fine.

This baby will be in vest, sleepsuit and 1 tog grow bag and ill see how it gets on....

laligo · 14/10/2005 11:06

he slept last night in sleepsuit, 1-tog bag and blanket, and seemed as normal - slept v well and not too hot. he's a wriggler too, but at the moment sleeps in a baby hammock, so can't roll over or wriggle round in a circle - but does kick his blankets downwards off him and so gets a cold chest, hence usefulness of baggie.
