A great idea or slightly strange?

I nanny for a family of 3 children on a p/t basis.

With 3 children to organise the mother has designated certain things/colours to each child.

Child 1 - Pink - pink bag, towel, bedding, overnight bag, pyjamas, socks etc
Child 2 - Blue - blue bag, towel, bedding, overnight bag, pyjamas, socks etc
Child 3 - Red - red bag, towel, bedding, overnight bag, pyjamas, socks etc

With things that are not always colour protected the children are assigned spots/stripes/plain ie some socks.

They also have their own coloured box in the hall where all there things that have migrated down the stairs get put ready to go back upstairs.

So a great idea - I know it helps me when I'm sorting out the washing, or slightly strange?

Fab idea, but it does rather assume that nothing will ever be passed down. We do that with towels, bags and underwear.

it seems slightly bizarre

does it matter who has what towel?

things like clothes must be easily to differentiate because of size? and if they're ethe same size then they can share?

Sounds slightly OCD to me.

Clothes aren't covered in the colour thing - they can wear what they want ie the B4 has a pink tutu Grin and G6 has a blue hoodie. It's just big things.

I had a school friend who was one of FIVE girls all fairly close in age. She rashly confessed to me once that they all had colour-coded knickers, and it was quite hard to find her colour (yellow, IIRC...)

I like the colour coded box in the hall idea. We have 1 box that everything goes into. The children are then meant to check the box as they go upstairs and take antyhing that belongs to them. Of course it doesn't work and I end up doing it.

But 6 dc would mean 6 coloured boxes for me so maybe not.

Agree the socks, towels in colours is a bit OCD. That would mean a lot of towel washing.

Grabaspoon · 10/02/2011 14:35

No more towel washing than if everyone had the same colour.

well mine share towels... so it would mean more towel washing here!

what if one of them doesn't want red pyjamas? is it just tough luck

Gonzo33 · 11/02/2011 05:16

I have the towel thing going on here, and the sock thing because my husband and my son wear the same size.

I actually think it is a oractical solution. Maybe I am slightly OCD though.

I agree with the towel separation; too much stuff gets passed around with a towel. I hate it when DH uses my towel to dry his hands, drives me mad. His towel has always been the one closest to the bathtub. Always. I wouldn't go the route of colour coding clothes, etc, but have each child with their own hamper and clothes come off and go directly into their hamper. I've got DD trained already, thank goodness; anything that comes off her, goes into her little hamper without being asked/told anymore... I know I need to be realistic as this might not last, but I'm loving it at the moment. I'm little OCD too. She also has her hook for her towel and knows that it is hers.
