Does this sound like thrush?

DS has a patch of small white pimply spots at the back of his bottom! Doesn't look at all sore and not red? Does it sound like thrush- I've no idea?!

Thrush is usually sore and looks it. How old is ds?

He's 9 months. He was on antibiotics a couple of weeks back which gave him a runny tummy. This is now better but we have this patch of white tiny bumps. He had nappy rash (sore and red) last week but that had cleared up. I hope this doesn't mean another visit to the dr's.

If the spots are white, then it sounds like ds's bottom when he had thrush. I think he was a bit red as well though (sorry, about a year ago now!)

You don't necc. need to go to the doctors - we just get prescribed canesten which you can buy OTC if you want to. Boots own is the same as the branded one, and a lot cheaper.

I would try and treat it if in doubt, as I don't think the cream can do any harm.

Are you bf or using cloth nappies? If so you may need treatment / may need to alter the way you wash the nappies whilst he's got symptoms.

Laura, it seems a little better today. However, if it returns I'll definitely ask the chemist about canesten.

I'm not bf but recently started using cloth nappies. How do I need to alter the way I wash them?

It depends how you are washing them at the moment.

Whilst you suspect thrush, I would always wash at 60+ degrees, and if your nappies can take it, a service wash at 90 degrees would ensure that all the nasties were dead. A good flap on the line on a sunny day will probably do the same job, but I don't expect we'll get many more of those this year!

Do you use fleece liners? They heat up little bottoms, and are sometimes associated with thrush - my ds always gets thrush if we use them. I use cotton liners, so if I suspect thrush (I'm still bf, so if I get it, I act as though he has too) I microwave my liners, which is another way of ensuring that they are nice and sterile.

If it's all gone now, it might just have been the adjustment to the new nappies. I maybe go to extremes because we had repeated bouts of thrush for 6 months (probably not repeated, but never properly got rid of IYKWIM).

If you see the GP, it might be worth mentioning that he 'had' thrush, and get him to prescribe some canesten in case he gets it again - I keep a few spare in the cupboard.

I hope that helps. Any other questions, feel free to ask.
