toddlers, beds and bedding!

DD is 17 months old now and wakes quite a few times at night still. MIL was round at the weekend and said that her son had been a nightmare sleeper but all their problems were solved as soon as he was moved into a bed.

So I just wondered, when did you move your toddler from a cot into a bed? And when did you introduce a duvet/pillow (was this before or at the time of introducing the bed?)

DD sleeps on the cot mattress at the moment in a gro-bag with no pillow.

Did moving to a bed improve matters or make things worse?!

Many thanks

We just moved DD to a toddler at 18mo, did pillow and duvet at the same time (she had previously been in a grobag). We had a few issues the first few nights - mainly because she kicked off the duvet and woke up because she was cold but otherwise she has been fine - in fact, she loves her 'big girl bed' as she calls it and often climbs up to play on it/look at books when we are upstairs.

We bought a normal single sized duvet and it is tucked in under the mattress along the wall side and bottom of the bed so she can't kick it off the bed completely - the smaller duvets we saw seemed a bit too small and drafty to me. We did buy a mini cot pillow though which usually ends up on the floor or pushed out of the way.

Thanks runningmonkey. I'm glad its going well for you.

Can I ask if she slept well before getting the bed?

we moved dd just before the age of 2 as she was getting less and less happy in her cot. She already had a pillow as she got one around the age of 1. She had also been sleeping with a lightweight quilt for a few months after she outgrew her grobag. She did settle better in the bed as it was more roomy. We used a full sized single bed with a duvet and pillow and she had a bedguard to stop her falling out.

mollysmum Of course you can! She has been a pretty good sleeper since about 9 months as long as her bedtime routine has been followed and she's had a decent sleep in the day!
