Evening all. We are buying a scooter for DD's 3rd birthday. Do we need to get her a helmet?
Can't remember if kids wear them for scooters or just bikes. Thanks.

My 6 and 4 yr olds both do.

Tysonandthehouseelves86 · 06/02/2011 21:05

Yes, I would, ds is 2.7 years and when i was looking at kiddie skates they come with a helmet so same sort of thing really.

Mummyrev · 06/02/2011 21:07

Yes we did. And given the speed they go on their fantastic micro three wheel scooters I'm glad we did.

Mine didn't.

Scooting wrist injuries seem much more common than head ones.

CURLYMAMMA · 06/02/2011 21:25

Yes, helmet on 4 year old here.

Beamur · 06/02/2011 21:27

Depends on the child - are they speed freaks??
My DD does not have a helmet, but there again, the scooter is mostly pootled gently along in the kitchen - there's not much more risk than her just running about, probably less... She's not worked out it can go faster (or outdoors) yet Grin

Ds age 4 wears one sometimes ( if I remember to put it on him) , most likely to remember if hes "going somewhere" rather than just pottling about on teh drive.

DD1 is 2.9 and got one for xmas. After lots of tantrums and screaming fits (I even posted on MN about it!) we gave in and she doesn't wear a helmet. It wasn't worth the aggro, and the only places she scoots are to preschool or to the park, both a short walk down a quiet road with wide pavements. She is also very good at stopping to cross the road and doesn't go that fast - I reckon no faster than a running pace, and she doesn't need a helmet to run!

Based on my own non-scientific research I'd say around 50% of the kids I see on scooters round here wear helmets.

Yes for bikes (especially after major helmet-busting crash last summer), no for scooters and skateboards and roller blades. They don't go as fast. When they fall off it's usually knees and elbows that get grazed.

enimod · 07/02/2011 12:29

yes- my son started using a scooter at 2 and a helmet- he knows no differetn. he is 4 now and automatically puts his helmet on. he has a micro scooter and to be honest it goes faster than his bike-he wears a helmet then too.

Flowergarden1 · 07/02/2011 22:35

Yes, always for bikes and scooters.

littlebylittle · 08/02/2011 07:51

Not for a scooter. See what a bike shop says. You rarely see kids with full safety gear and I don't hear about scooting accidents much(will prob prompt a flood of them).

enimod · 08/02/2011 12:11

her is one scooting accident- when i was a child i saw a boy aged 9 go down a slope on his scooter and hit a pebble- he went head over and cracked his head open. he was not being silly nor dangerous. as i said earlier my son is now 4 and automatically puts his helmet on- it is a top range one-his head doesnt sweat much and it grows with him. we scoot to the park and he even plays on the slide and climbing frame still wearing it-why would you risk not teaching your children to be safe? they only need a knock to the temple and that could be it.

tigercametotea · 08/02/2011 12:17

I use a helmet on DS (he's 2.5) because whenever he falls , his head always bumps the surface first and its quite scary when I think about his head bumping the concrete ground outside, so I always use a helmet on him when he's on the bike/scooter. I don't use elbow pads or knee pads though, he hates them, always wants them off, but the helmet he's willing to put up with!

LadyOfTheFlowers · 08/02/2011 12:20

The eldest 2 wear helmets when on anything with wheels on it on a pavement.
Bikes/scooters on school run etc. Not in the cozy coupe in the garden obviously. :o

Helmets with a little brim at the front also help to minimise face scrape-age, usually meaning only chins get grazed rather than whole side of face over eye - which looks shocking. :(

With scooters it's not so much they go too fast, it's in case they accidently scoot or crash into the road - would rather they were wearing a helmet in that instance.

In the garden which is grassed, no helmets at all.

SameOldJollster · 08/02/2011 12:29

No
DS is 2y8m, he got his scooter at 2. He does go scarily fast.

When he's older and gets a bike, and starts going on the road, then I will insist on a helmet.
