Would you leave your baby in a supermarket trolley?

Whilst shopping this morning the trolley was starting to get really heavy so several times I left the trolley at the end of an aisle and walked to the other end of the row to get supplies.

Of course the trolley with ds4 was in my sight at all times but it got me thinking - would you do the same?

And how sad is it when it's not your conscience that stops you doing something but the reaction you might get from MN?

Ha ha! This is getting silly! I once left dd when she was a baby all by herself in a trolley! I thought dh had her, he thought I had her! We found her safe and sound and fast asleep in the cheese section!

I have no doubt that every mum who comes on Mumsnet is a very caring and doting mother, why else would they be here? So you do what you believe is best for your baby and, excuse my French, but bugger the rest of 'em! It's your life honey!

LadySherlockofLGJ · 12/10/2005 20:59

No, you are not a bad mother, how old is he ?? 4 or the fourth one ??

Mum2girls · 12/10/2005 20:59

Yes, have done that loads of times.

FrumpyGrumpy · 12/10/2005 21:00

Hell ye, if they can see you/hear you its fiiiiiiinnnnneeee. Do it all the time. (4.5 and two at 1.2).

toothyboy · 12/10/2005 21:00

I did it today as well - too much hassle co-ordinating a heavy trolley around dithering pensioners to pick up a loaf of bread!!

But bad mummy moment later in the same shopping expedition. I picked up a packet of biscuits (we rarely have biscuits in the house!) and ds announced to the whole aisle that he would eat them when he got home while watching the telly! I did hear some sniggers!

ScreamEagle · 12/10/2005 21:01

He's the 5th - age nearly 10 months. And charms the pants off everyone who walks by him wondering who he belongs to!

I know it's silly but surely there is a market for more "would you leave your baby......" threads.

I've left DD3 in a trolley at times too. Frequently leave DD 2 in son's pre-school. Only when the teacher brings her out do I remember to take her hoem But that's a different story. Just hope I don't leave the rock-a-tot on top of the car roof one day..(I am joking!).

ScreamEagle · 12/10/2005 21:05

I have unpacked the car before, locked it up, come in the house, looked round and wondered where ds was. Then realised I'd locked him in the car and forgotten all about him!

I would have cheerfully left DS ANYWHERE today - even asked could he board at school. It's a day school so they said no - but I seriously considered just leaving him anyway!

I did stop the car and threaten dump him on the side of the road if he didn't stop whinging!

codface · 12/10/2005 21:13

my ds3 is 2 ( oh YES you all cry)

lol at cheese section

codface · 12/10/2005 21:13

my aubt DID leave her son(16) at the side of the road on boxing day
he spent a night at a railway station

laa · 12/10/2005 21:15

we left (actually I left) baby DD in a zipped up tent (in her travel cot fast asleep), got into the car, put my seat belt on ..until; DH looked at me puzzled and reminded me that we had 3. Am i a dreadful mother?

Tortington · 12/10/2005 21:22

kinda similar frequently left twins in twins pushchair at end of aisles - there was no point in trying to get sown some aisles with the number of people in them with trolleys

handlemecarefully · 12/10/2005 21:29

I can't believe you have to ask this - of course it's okay and anybody who argues otherwise is a demented raving nutter!

BudaBabe · 12/10/2005 21:31

I make sure I get my coin deposit back though - sometimes it's a struggle to get trolley connected back to others with DS sitting in it - but I usually manage.

It's safer than a parked car.

aloha · 12/10/2005 21:33

But suppose it spontaneously combusted? Hmm. It may be OK for you (as you are a bad mother) but not for me (because I am bloody fantastic and also a saint.)

Blu · 12/10/2005 21:39

he was safer in the trolley than on your kitchen floor, by the sounds of it, so yes, i think you acted in a perfectly reasonable way!
