Dilemma re locked car scenario - what would you have done?

Well not actually locked but leaving child in the car.

I got called from work to collect DS from school at lunchtime - he was crying, temperature, earache. So I managed to get him a cancellation appt at the doctor and it turns out he has tonsilitis. DH is in Germany.

So when it got to time to collect DD from nursery I had to take DS with me in the car. DS pretty miserable - so should I have left him sat in the car listening to Coldplay or should I have taken him with me into a roomful of one year olds to spread his germs?

depends how long you were going to be, and how old he is!
I suppose he is at least 5? I think i'd have left him and gone in as quick as poss to grab dd and dashed back to car

Bozza · 12/10/2005 20:37

He's 4 - 5 in Feb.

depends how far away from nursery i had to park, if right outside the door and i could see the car then yes i would leave him but otherwise no. although that is only my opinion, you know the safety fo the car park and area.

tbh I'd have probably taken him and just hovered at the door or asked someone to keep an eye on him in the car whiel I picked her up. However if it was an enclosed parking area, specific to the nursery, I might have especially if he'd been in view. I'm surprised at just how many mums at ds and dd's school leave their younger ones in their cars while dropping/meeting older siblings. Perhaps if dd was asleep or ill I'd do the same.

Well I parked in the nursery car park but he was not in view because the door is round the corner. And I left him in the car listening to the music. I did it again this morning. If it had beenn the other way round I would not have left DD (she's only one).

Yes, I would have left him.

jessicaandbumpsmummy · 13/10/2005 12:32

At that age, yes, as long as he was happy to stay, i would also have left him.

hunkerpumpkin · 13/10/2005 12:33

As long as car not on a slope and DS generally sensible, I'd have left him.

Were the keys with him in the car so he could listen to the music? Have read two horror stories about young children driving recently...

Bozza · 13/10/2005 12:36

OOh no - no way would I have left him with the keys. You can turn my stereo back on after you have turned the ignition off - that was just something to occupy him. And the car was parked on a gentle slope about 6 " from a wall so not far to roll.
