Sleeping Baby/Child in Car

Before I start can I just caveat this by saying I HAVEN'T done this as was very unsure but...

What do you think about leaving child (14.5 months in this case but not really relevant) sleeping in the car:

  • In the driveway at home
  • WITH A BATTERY POWERED BABY MONITOR (that bit v important)
  • Wrapped up nice and warm so they won't be cold
  • Quiet cul-de-sac street with very little passing traffic
  • Very nosey neighbours across the road

while you going inside (with the other half of the monitor) rather than sitting in the car with them.

Car to house transfer not really an option as will almost certainly wake up and really need the nap.

Thoughts please and thank you.

I've done it (or very similar anyway)

We do it all the time but instead of a monitor just crack the car window and house windows and then sit somewhere we can hear them when they wake. We didn't do this on our old place which didn't have a private drive though and was a busy road.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 06/02/2011 21:51

If I could park the car at the front of our house then I would as we're also in a very quiet cul-de-sac. I would probably keep to the front of the house (potter in the kitchen) so I could keep an eye out though.

However, our drive is down the side so I don't as it's quite out of the way. I can however get our wireless broadband on my iPhone from the driveway so I MN, listen to the radio and eat liquorice allsorts while DD sleeps in the back Blush

My sister has often left her baby/toddler in the car to sleep.. Various places.. on a drive, parked by the side of the (busy) road. No monitor, just looking at the window occassionally.

Personally I couldnt do it and have always either bought them in or just driven round for a while whilst singing along to the radio. Often they would wake but personally id rather just deal with that then leave them alone.

CrispyTheCrisp · 06/02/2011 22:14

I do it but no monitor. Lock the car, so when they wake they trigger the alarm. We do live very rurally though

MrsRhettButler · 06/02/2011 23:25

I do it (as do all my friends while visiting) but no monitor, I just sit in the kitchen so I can see the car, I live on a quiet cul d sac also with a private drive. Personally I'd rather be able to see the car than be worried about the monitor, I wouldn't feel safe if I couldn't see them

Missymoomum · 07/02/2011 06:13

I've done it too. Drive is at the side of the house next to the kitchen door so i just leave the door open and lock the car doors. We also live in a quiet cul-de-sac. I too wouldn't want to do it if i couldn't see the car.

I do it, but we live "behind the wire" and my drive is within eye and earshot of my kitchen so I tend to prepare dinner whilst she is sleeping, leaving the car door open and the back door open so I can hear her as soon as she wakes.

ledkr · 07/02/2011 06:35

I have too cos drive overlooked but also depends on weather, car temps can become very extreme very quickly.

thumbdabwitch · 07/02/2011 06:36

I haven't left DS in the car for a nap, but I have left him asleep in the car while I nip into a shop that I am parked right outside of, so I can see the car at all times. And I do mean "nip in" - as in, I know exactly what I want, where it is, and that's all I'm getting. Max 5 mins.

But I don't have problems transferring DS from car to house when he's asleep - when he was small enough, he was in one of those clip-in carry seats; and now he's bigger, he stays asleep when carried in anyway.

I probably wouldn't have done it at my old house in England because of the way the parking/front door were set up; and I wouldn't do it here because there is a long garden path between the car port and the door - but if I could see the car clearly and hear if he kicks off, I'd probably do it in your position.

SuckerForPunishment · 07/02/2011 07:06

No chance. I dont drive but if I did...no. But then, I live in an area where they'd have the car gone in seconds and wouldn't care if a child was in the back.
