I had to ask, my dd who is just 4 weeks old usually feeds every 2 hours like clockwork she stuff's herself silly and then sleeps for two hours - at night too! but i fed her last night (am bfeeding) as usual and we both went to bed at 10, when i woke up at 3am she was still zonked out i tried to feed her as the HV said she is too young to leave any longer than 4 hours, but she wouldnt have any of it - i got one pathetic little suck out of her and she went and zonked out again so i put her back to bed, she finally woke up at 7am and whinged a bit and i fed her for about 10 minutes, since then she has fed at 1pm for about 5 minutes and i have tried to feed her just now and she wont even open her mouth - she MUST be hungry she is such a guzzler all the time, i have tried everything but its like im producing knock out drugs in my milk and she out for the count since last night! is this normal? - she is my third and my ds1 and ds2 never did this to my memory! im not too worried - but i am a little, am i worrying unecessarily?? she doesnt look ill??? im really puzzled! can anyone help??? xxx

does she react normally when awake

perhaps ask in breast and bottle feeding thread as well as there are lots of feeding experts here

try HUNKER for example

Are you engorged? Or does she seem to be taking enough to keep you from being uncomfortable?

Is she asleep all the time now? Or sometimes awake, but just not eating?

And is she still weeing?

I'd trust your instincts - if you think she is unwell, get her checked.

HelenEmjay · 12/10/2005 17:12

This is it - im really not sure what my instincts say which is odd for me as i always have great instincts and i always trust them, she looks well and she seems well when she is awake - usually but i havent seen her awake since she was awake last night! i suppose im a little worried as although she is only 4 weeks surely she should be awake enough to feed? i have had really FULL boobs today since she hasnt taken anything from me, i dont want my milk to dry up!!

Hmm, I'd pump, to keep supply up, and, as long as she's:

  • alert sometimes
  • not feverish
  • still weeing

I'd leave it be until tomorrow morning. Unless your instincts are screaming something different ...

RTKMonherBROOMSTICK · 12/10/2005 17:16

I don't really know but sounds a bit worrying to me

What about giving her a bath to see how she reacts then

Oh dear... I would be worried but mainly because DS2 (also our third) was very ill as a baby and my first clue was his lack of interest in feeding. I would keep a close eye on her and find a note-book to jot down how often she feeds and for how long as well as how often she wees/poops and any other observations that you think might be helpful in the event that you do need to have her seen by a doctor.

I really hope that it resolves itself and that she goes back to feeding regularly. In the meantime I would follow the advice to express some milk both to keep up your suppply and to prevent yourself from developing mastitis.

(Again, this paranoid approach is based on the challenges faced with our third. I am sorry if I am worrying you unnecessarily.)

I would give your out of hours doc a ring tbh. ds2 was a bit like this(not so extreme)- and it took weeks to pick up that he had an infection (because he seemed fine if sleepy- no temp or anything, and had been born early so I assumed it was that). By the time it was picked up he was quite poorly. We were back and forwards to the HV for ages weighing etc How have nappies been? I wouldn't be happy to leave it any longer- I find here the out of hours docs are more use than nhs direct.
