Heavy wetting newborn - what wraps to use?

My ds is 7 weeks old and a hungry wee chap who seems to produce an enormous amount of wee.

I've given up on the new born totsbots and am now trying the fluffles that his big sister used until she was potty training at 20months. The thing is he is still wetting through, not just leaking round the legs but soaking through the part he's been lying on.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't thing I can use boosters as the nappies are huge already. I am using Tommy tippee cotton bottom wraps size 2 which are quite old but also some new PUL wraps from mothercare. Would a larger wrap help? I am changing him about every 3 hours which is about as often as I can without disturbing his sleep.

I am finding I keep using disposables even though I don't want to because I am fed up with changing a full outfit every few hours.

Motherease airflows worked very well for us. DS was also a hugely heavy wetter, nothing kept him dry in the first few months, not even disposables. He did get better and we found boosted Bambinex shaped nappies with ME airflows did the job.

My DS(also 7 weeks) is a heavy wetter, which totsbots did you get? I found the bamboozles worked better than the flexitots which were hit and miss.

Motherease wraps were the best for me.

I found tots bots wraps were not very good for my heavy wetter! We used nature babies and motherease and they were both good wraps!

motherease are fab

ilovemydogandMrObama · 05/02/2011 20:48

Not sure that a wrap is the problem. It may be that you need to use a booster, in a boy strategic position Wink

Have always found Tots Bots wraps brilliant.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 05/02/2011 20:55

Motherease airflows are the best IME.

I agree with ilove that you need to use a booster at the front. With DS I used to double a booster over so that it was all at the front.

Have you thought of wool wraps, possibly with a wool cover to lay on?

DS used to soak through all his PUL wraps and then I tried wool, which worked out fantastically well. Or do the wraps need re-proofing? Not sure how it's supposed to be done, I have used re-proofer for water repellent clothing IYSWIM, but haven't tried the wraps out yet (waiting on a very doesn't want to get born yet overdue newbie!)

When he was bigger I used to use fluffles with the insert doubled at the front - sort of folded back on itself, and a tripple folded muslin inside too, folded in half and then into thirds, pushed into the nappy between the fluffles soaker and the fleece part of the nappy, for night nappies, although this could be just a wee bit big on a newborn Wink.

But moving onto wool was the right thing for us to do - no more leaks during the day onto his trousers etc as I used longies and the nights were great too - using a wrap plus longies, or a wrap plus lanolised wool cover for the cot.

Thank you all for the advice.

purveyor do you remember how old your ds was when the leaking stopped being an issue. It is reassuring to hear that the flooding might ease up!

Currently I find floods of pee with cloth and poo shooting up his back with disposables so we are doing a lot of washing!

I was using the bamboo tots bots but I think they are just too small.

Sounds like I need to get some bigger wraps so i can fit a booster in and see if that works.

bb99 is there anywhere can find out more about using wool? I might give it a try but I don't really get it - are they just a bit damp all the time? Also how would it work with a sling? Would I just get damp too? I am a bit milk-soaked at the mo with top notes of sick not sure that adding wee to that will improve my odour or self esteem!

93pjb we went up to size 2 bamboozles at 5 weeks so may be worth getting a couple to try, I found them to be fab!

WillbeanChariot · 06/02/2011 17:18

Another vote here for motherease wraps. DS doesn't leak even in his night nappy which he soaks through. I use terry squares with them and double boosters at night.

Alibabaandthe40nappies · 06/02/2011 18:11

I used wool with DS for a while at nights. Found it really good but I think for daytime I would have needed a PUL wrap underneath.

bb99 · 06/02/2011 21:50

93pjb - I will look for more info.

I didn't notice too much dampness (except overnight) as I used to change nappy and wool at the same time, then leave wool to air - unless offensive poo got on it, they were filthy (when crawling/walking) or the lanolin had run out IYSWIM.

Don't know about a sling - never got around to having one last time.

I will look for more info for you.

I am sure it wouldn't add to your eau de mama Grin which I fondly remember Wink

This is a wool soaker group run through yahoo, they've been a great help.

groups.yahoo.com/group/wool_soaker_group/

ebay guide - seemed to have some useful info, esp about the wicking.

reviews.ebay.co.uk/Using-wool-as-a-cloth-nappy-cover_W0QQugidZ10000000002779103

Hope these are a help. The only thing I found when starting out was that it could be a bit on the expensive side if you didn't knit or sew from re-used jumpers etc but I don't know how much PUL wraps are these days anyway.

Good Luck!

I didn't get on very well with my wool experiment but do get on well with totsbots bamboozle stretch size 2 (which is a BTP) with an extra bamboo booster if required and covered with a motherease rikki wrap, the rikki has velcro so I find I get a better fit.
