Is a 30min walk to school too much for 5yr old?

We are moving house soon and my DS who's almost 5 will have to walk 30 minutes to school each day - and back again of course. It's too tricky to drive, for various reasons. He has a scooter but I'm worried this is too far - he does tend to moan a fair bit that he's tired whenever we have to walk any distance. Does anyone else have any experience of this kind of walk with a child this age? thanks

Am i the only one who found having them on a scooter more work than them walking?!

and then carrying it home was a pita.

Scooters are god-awful in my experience. The child crashes and then cries their head off. So you have to wait for them to calm down, then YOU (the adult) has to carry the scooter and all the bags to finally get there.
Either that or they simply get "tired" (ie bored) of riding it and YOU have to carry it anyway.
Scooters are a complete waste of time.

My 4yr old and 2 yr old walk 20 minutes to school each day. In fact my youngest walks there and back twice a day as she finishes earlier than the 4 year old. It was very slow going in September, but now they positively run along!

Something to eat on the way home always helps, plus of course the usual distraction techniques. I really like it actually as is gives me 20 minutes to talk about their day.

They walk no matter what the weather. I just dress them up or down depending on the temperature, rain and wind.

It's not that far really. Ds came for a 40 min walk with me when he got home from school to walk the dog. We only got the dog recently but will have to do that most days from now on.

Look up a Zigo leader bike. You could get them both in it.

My 4 year old walks to nursery 30 minutes each way every day and has done she was 3.5. She's not too keen when it's raining/windy but by the time we walk to the bus stop, wait and then walk from the bus stop the other end it's the same.

To be honest I preferred a scooter (and tow) to having to do a shuffle behind a buggy board

Thanks everyone, it's great to hear your experiences and reassuring to know some people are doing it already. Guess we'll have to just see how it goes... x
