Would you leave your baby...

... asleep in the pram in a dark room which is down a corridor, about 200 yards from where you are spending the evening at a wedding reception? There is no babyphone. The room is completely accessible to everybody who is going in and out of the hotel. You check on your baby every 30 minutes or so, she is normally an excellent sleeper.

Hell No and I would say I'm quite laid back but then I'm not into the whole leaving babies unattended thing anyway

I'd just let baby sleep in pram in the reception

that woudl depend on the amount of free wine available

Personally I would have done tbh. My kids are now older so it is not an option. But I probably would have taken a baby monitor with me.

I certainly left them at peoples houses asleep in prams inside while we were out getting drunk outside and forgetting to check them However there was not free access.

I do understand why others wouldn't, but I wouldn't panic/make a comment and probably would agree with the friends who thought 'good for them'.

I know we are all worried about out kids, but I do think some people over worry (IYKWIM) and cause themselves more issues. BUT this comes from my parents upbringing which allowed me a huge amount of freedom and so I try to give it to my children. FWIW I did feel a bad mummy yesterday when I sent DD (aged6) off to the loo in Sainsbury's then she couldn't find me as I had wondered off!! However she is a sensible soul who stood right by the loo exit and waited until I came to find her 5 mins later.

No, not if the room where accessible to everyone going in and out of the hotel. No way. We left our sleeping daughter in our hotel room down the hall whilst we ate, drank and played cards in my parents' room - but we also had a baby monitor.

ladymuck · 11/10/2005 11:40

Am I just particularly naive or is there a spate of opportunistic baby-snatching that I don't know about?

I could imagine someone prowling through a hotel looking for unattended bags or costs say, but a baby?

I far more understand people's nervousness about stays in maternity wings of hospitals - a much more obvious place to go baby-snatching in my opinion.

Caligula · 11/10/2005 11:47

No.

It would ruin my evening to know that my baby was alone and unsupervised in a public place. What's wrong with a sling?

Tortington · 11/10/2005 12:00

well - with a sling you cant flirt as much, and it doesnt halp your balance after 3 glasses

Rhubarb · 11/10/2005 12:10

Get back to work you s**g!

ladymuck · 11/10/2005 12:13

My baby hated a sling. Now that would be a fun evening - screaming baby hanging in front of you during a wedding reception!

Tortington · 11/10/2005 12:16

says you rhubarb havent you got one of your sixteen jobs to be going to?

Rhubarb · 11/10/2005 12:17

Shut it HellMouth! At least I'm gonna be having an affair soon! Not got time to do any proper work you see! Nah nah!

Nightynight · 11/10/2005 12:22

no way. the baby might get nicked.

ladymuck · 11/10/2005 12:30

Sorry - I just don't get these opportunistic baby-snatchers?

CountessDracula · 11/10/2005 12:42

be warned you will may be accused of neglect!!!!

CountessDracula · 11/10/2005 12:46

but no I wouldn't leave mine in a room where the general public had access tbh, nor without a monitor.

Can you book her a room in the hotel and get a sitter?

weesaidie · 11/10/2005 13:18

I am very laid back but I have to say I don't think I would do this, would freak me out that the room was accessible to all.

dillydally · 11/10/2005 13:20

Nope I would be very scared and worried all evening

bosscat · 11/10/2005 13:29

no way

Nightynight · 11/10/2005 20:14

ladymuck - all my babies are so incredibly gorgeous that all who see them want to snatch them. naturally.

LeahE · 12/10/2005 00:40

ladymuck - I wouldn't be worried about babystealing, but at wedding receptions I've been to there are a LOT of EXTREMELY drunk people wondering around. I'd be more worried about paralytic people deciding they want to pick up the baby, or leaning over the cot smoking and dropping ash in, or not even noticing it and dumping a pile of coats on top.

Although my baby is clearly just as gorgeous as Nightynight's ...

NightHowl · 12/10/2005 00:59

noooooo. wouldnt do it. but then i dont take babies to wedding receptions, christmas parties, or anything like that anyway. i never took ds until he was about 3 (saying that he did have asthma so it was mostly about that) but i probably wont take dd to any either until she's over 2. ive always been lucky enough to get a babysitter.

although if anyone stole her they would pay me to have her back im sure.
