Settle an argument - how to carry scissors safely??

Seems petty but major argument with DH over correct way to teach DS (3.4) to hold scissors if carrying them.

Have taught him to hold them by the closed blades, which is what I was taught by my parents and my school (admittedly a VERY long time ago!), and what his nursery school has also taught him.
DP was taught to carry them by his mother by the handles - which is surely the best way to stab yourself or someone else?

Before anyone cries "He shouldn't be carrying scissors" this is just if he is bringing them to me or going a couple of steps - not walking round and round unsupervised with them!

Holding by the closed blades, also how they should be handed to people. For the obvious reason that pointing a sharp object at other people tends not to be a great idea Grin

Agree with you, I was taught to carry them by the blades (closed of course!) and hand them to someone else by the handles. If they had sharp points and you were holding the handles you could stab the person you were giving them to - or yourself if you fell over etc!

I was taught to carry them by the handles, pointing down and away from you. But you then need to switch to holding the closed blades to hand them over, so I think the way the nursery has taught is probably more straightforward.

I was taught the same as amum.

If you carry them by the blades, which way around do you point the finger loops? I think that tripping could result in stabbing yourself in the chest?

cherub59 · 28/01/2011 14:09

supposedly the reflex when you fall is to open your hands and if you are holding the handles you will open the blades and do significantly more damage - I was always told holding the closed blades (with the blades pointing down) the scissors would just end up flat on the floor....

Hold by blades

Altho most chlds scissors couldnt cut tissue paper never mind human flesh

52Girls · 28/01/2011 14:12

You are correct, Cherub59.

ISNT · 28/01/2011 14:45

You don't hold them by the handle end with your fingers through the handles Shock

TBH if you're holding them at the handle end or the blade end with them pointing down, it's pretty much the same thing Grin

AngelDog · 28/01/2011 19:22

Holding by the blades here.

CointreauVersial · 28/01/2011 19:24

Hold by the blades, pointing downwards. I remember this being drilled into the dcs by their preschool.

ChippingInSmellyCheeseFreak · 28/01/2011 19:29

Holding the blades under the handles, pointy end down, sort of sideways...

FranSanDisco · 28/01/2011 19:29

Yes, hold by blades pointing down.

TooManyButtons · 28/01/2011 20:03

Have just asked DH who is a incredibly geeky health & safety evangelist consultant. He says they should be carried holding the blades, with your arm down by your side.

Argument settled Grin

TooManyButtons · 28/01/2011 20:04

Oh yes and pointed down too.

moodymama · 29/01/2011 10:22

By the blades, pointing down.

purepurple · 29/01/2011 10:27

cyb, they can cut hair though Grin
Hold by blades, of course.

MungBeans · 29/01/2011 10:51

By the blades, arm down by your side.
