Would you keep your child off school for being exhausted?

Ds is 8 and pooped, I put him to bed at 7.30pm for an early night, seems he was so over tired he had one of those nights where he just could not nod off. He was a bit hot and bothered. He finally nodded off at 9.30pm, then woke at 2.30am after a bad dream, he was hot and bothered again and was awake for about a hour.

He is now sleeping soundly and I need to wake him at about 7.30am but part of me is thinking hell, let him rest.

Have never done this before, what do you think?

Keep him home.

What is he going to learn if he is exhausted?

Im keeping one of mine off school and one off nursery today, both full of coughs/snots but ok in themselves, but exhausted from coughing all night.

One day won't do any harm IMO. But you do need to wake him a little because he may want to go anyway.

Tortington · 25/01/2011 07:29

i'd send mine in, knowing that i'd feed him as soon as he got home and he might just go straight to bed at 6pm

Yes.

anyway he might be cooking something

keep him off and tell him he has a temp so that he thinks he's poorly and not just getting a free day off

SandStorm · 25/01/2011 07:30

If he's hot and bothered it sounds more like he's sickening for something. One day won't hurt. Keep him at home.

Appletrees · 25/01/2011 07:31

or just send him late when he wakes up

tell school he had a temp last night so you were waiting to make sure he's ok today

nickschick · 25/01/2011 07:34

Keep him home if hes not so bright hes not up to learning and may well get sick in school or pick up a bug whilst there.

Duvet day.

stealthsquiggle · 25/01/2011 07:38

I would let him sleep.

Not make a habit of it, but on the (very) rare occasion I have done it with DS his teacher has been wholeheartedly supportive.

I sent my DD to school yesterday even though she had been up since 5am and i wasnt certain she wasnt poorly, told teacher and had cover on standby to collect her if she seemed run down but she managed a whole day although she didnt eat anything. Have decided to keep her off today as yet again she was awake at 5 coughing and spluttering. she is now in my bed with hot ribena and cbeebies........
Keep him off......so much going around at the minute its worth giving him time to rest and see if he can avoid getting ill.

gorionine · 25/01/2011 08:09

At 8yo I would send him. Reception age I would not have woken him up.

Northernlurker · 25/01/2011 08:11

I would keep them at home as long as they are happy to be at home.
At the end of the summer term last year dd1 and I ended up in out of hours docs. She had a tummy ache for 4 days which just wasn't going away and she was stressed by it. Saw a lovely nurse who checked her out for everything - nothing obvious - and gave her opinion that 'she's knackered'. Dd1 had the penultimate day of her term off and slept most of it then went in for the last half day looking a lot better. They really do get tired and it's not good for them.

pipplin · 25/01/2011 09:02

Probably a bit late now but if it were my DS I would keep him off. Exhaustion at any age is pretty hellish. Especially if he had an interrupted night.

DrNortherner · 25/01/2011 13:38

I had decided to let him sleep but at 7.35am he woke naturally and seemed fine. Tuesday is swimming day so he enjoyes that!

Bet he will be knackered later though. Early night later.

He also had a bt of a cough coming on.

Thanks all.

If it was one of my DD's i would keep her off, but if it was my DS I wouldn't as he is high maintainance!
