Newborn Nappy Advise

Hi there,

Im going to be a 1st time mum in April and have decided to go the cloth nappy route despite all my friends negatives/sarcastic comments !

Which just makes me want to have total
success with them !!

So, I want to use from day 1 and was planning to use muslin cloth with a wrap.

But my question is how long would I do this before I either choose a shaped nappy (thinking tots bots) and what size wraps/nappies should i get and how many in each size ?

Would i need 5 extra smalls for when using with muslin cloth and then 5 smalls for early shaped nappies and when do i move to medium, approximatly how old will the baby be ?

I have seen some super cute Wee Notion wraps but dont want to spend lots only to use for a few months.

Also ive seen cute nappies but then you need to cover them with a wrap which seemd to defeat the purpose of a cute print on the nappy (talking about 2 part system) Is that right ? or do you ever use the nappy without a wrap.

Sorry for long message and questions.

Any advise truely welcome

Thanks All

Personally I would advise to plan on using disposables for the first month, just whilst you recover and adjust to having a newborn. Not that using cloth nappies is difficult but in those early days all spare time should be spent sleeping rather than putting the washing machine on!

A two part nappy system is excellent, I started with TotsBots and thought they were excellent. We had the bamboozles and always had a wrap over the top otherwise the wet just soaks through to their clothes. I never bothered with cutie nappies as I knew they would always be covered with a wrap, but did buy one or two cute wraps when they were a little older.

I started with fifteen size 1 bamboozles and four wraps also size 1. I wouldn't bother buying the extra small wraps until after baby has arrived, you might end up with a 8 /9 lb baby and size 1 would be fine.

Thanks RunningTap,

How long was your LO wearing size 1 ? How many months were they when you had to move upto size 2 ?

Thanks

In size 1 until about 7.5 months I think at about 17 to 18 lbs, hope that helps.

I would second doing disposables for the first few weeks. I did and then went into cloth (mainly BG). But fitteds are brilliant, I just found that I prefered pockets in the end.

Am a confirmed clothie addict but yep - Pampers New Baby were fabbo when they were tiny! When he outgrew those we went into cloth (around 4 months I think?) We use Motherease and have/had a selection of wraps - he has huge chunky thighs though so he was in medium wraps pretty quickly.

Also this time we bought some super-cheap all in one/stuffies from ebay - they were £3 each including the boosters inside, cute prints too. They're multi-adjustable so will last birth to potty (though you might need to add extra absorbancy as lo gets bigger/produces more wee volume!).

I started with cloth when DD1 was 4 days old (first day at home) and DD2 was about 10 minutes old.

NappyShedSal, what did you use for your newborns and for how long ?

I used disposables for the first 2 weeks I think, then went straight into tots bots flexitots size 1, with size 1 wraps - he weighed about 9lbs at that point. I'm still using them now at 6 months/17ish lbs but they're getting snug.

Used disposables with DD for a few days in hospital and when travelling, otherwise reusables basically from day 4. Absolutely love it!

We are using two-parters: Motherease Rikki with Bambinex bamboo or Teddies. Tried using muslins but failed to master the fine art of folding and somehow it did not work. I have a few Sandy's as well which work very well for the night.

We are doing sized nappies. DD is almost 5 months and still in size 1/small, but she is very skinny. I

Like you, I was lured by pretty IttyBitty nappies, but they tend to leak on her, especially All in Ones (Snap in Ones are better), so I only put them on during the day under a nice outfit as they are trimmer than two-parters.

I used Motherease Sandys with DD1 and an airflow wrap - she was over 9lb though.

For DD2 I used some of the teeny tiny newborn nappies that I had made for our local Maternity hospital, but she was too big for them really. So Motherease Sandys and Fuzzibunz and Onelife. But if I was having another newborn, and especially a smaller newborn, I would use Pop'n'Gro pockets size 1 without a doubt.

I also used disposables for the first 4-5 weeks as they fitted better than the washable ones we bought. We are now using pop'n gro pocket nappies (They come in two sizes, I think size one goes to about 6 months). We like them a lot, they are dead easy to use but we do use disposables when we are travelling. It's well worth having a tumble drier (or space for them to dry) when using washables.

I used motherease sandys from day 1.With dd1 I started with the small which goes from 8 -20 lbs, which was fine, but she was only 6lb 4oz, so a little bulky at first. Knowing that dd2 was likely to be about the same, I bought some extra small, which are 6 -12lb, and they lasted until she was about 3 months - might have lasted a bit longer, but her thighs are chubbier than dd1! I have 8 as new extra small that I can sell on, if you are interested, pm me!
