What happens if you let let your dc walk to school by themselves and when they get there the school is shut.
I have just started letting ds walk to school with a freind by himself.
He has just turned 10 and we live a car ride away from the school me and dp are working parents so dp drops ds off at freinds who is in walking distance although still a fair walk away and they both then walk to school themselves.
If they get to school and it is closed for whatever reason me and dp are both at work and so is friends parents.
So what arrangements should I have in place.

Why would the school be closed without your knowledge?

But if that ever happened I would make sure they knew to go to a neighbour's house (a SAHM perhaps) and how to use a payphone.

Also is it just me or does anyone else get that horrible worry over whether their child has made it safely and got inot school okay.

Well in the past I have turned up at the school and there has been a notice outside that its closed due to a heating problem that was at infants though when I always took him

I have told ds to take his mobile but he refuses as he doesn,t want to hand it in at the office and collect it again.

Haven't you got a network of parents who all know each other and each others dcs, have telephone numbers, addresses etc?

We all have a list of each other and our children have a numbered list of agreed places to go depending on the day.

Ie - Mum A doesn't work on a Monday so you go there if there's a problem.

If she is out then ring Dad B who has own business down the road and can come back at the drop of a hat.

etc etc etc.

That way you know the trail to follow to find your dcs.

In the snow last year I had 9 dcs here because it was my day off. Worked perfectly. All pre-arranged and it's worked for years.

buy him a phone card, and leave him a list of office numbers for you. dh and friends parents.
im sure if his old enough to walk to school his old enough to use the phone.

Also make sure he knows how to reverse charges in emergency

Would there not be someone there in case such a thing happened.

purepurple · 22/01/2011 10:56

I am sure that even if the school closed, say because of a burst pipe or something similiar, there would still be adults at the school. Not everybody would have got the message. The school will have a contigency plan, which would involve phoning parents and asking you to came and collect your child. If they could not get hold of a parent, then i don't think any school would just turf them out in the street. Somebody would have to stay with them while they tried all the contact numbers.
if you are worried about your child not arriving at school, arrange with the school office that they phone you if your child does not attend.
I still worry about DD getting to school and she is 14.

cartie · 22/01/2011 11:01

don,t know if the school would take charge of those children that have made their own way or not.
Okay thanks will look into the phone card idea

Why not ask the school what would happen.
