muppet treasure island which he loves

we let him watch it as he is really into pirates..we first watched it with him and always when there are scenes he does not like...he tells me which ones... and then i fast forward them

but mil went hysterics in hall nearly crying like a toddler tanturm and then apparently when i left shouted at him and shut it

poor thing he likes to watch it after school when tired and i really did not think it was that bad

opinions???

he is of a quiet dispostiion and has had nightmares...but not of pirates and since has been watching this dvd it has actually helped him sleep of all things, fired his imagination and got him into pirates big time

I've not seen the film. Are there very scary things in it?
FWIW, your MiL sounds like a loon. You are the mother not her, I'd tell her to fuck off. TBH, that's my default with MiL's though.

hippytrippynamedropper · 21/01/2011 12:34

What is she worried about? Is there something about Kermit we should know?

bumbly · 21/01/2011 12:36

there is mention of murder in the air and gunpowder and eplxosions but he loves those

but it is al a bit slapstick

and a huge jennifer suanders who hits pirates away

but slapstick scary not gorey scary if you see what i mean?

I doubt you will be scarring him for life. I speak as someone whose daughter watched Wizard of Oz on loop from an early age. Hasn't done her any harm. Apart from instilling a love of sparkly, heeled shoes.

gastrognome · 21/01/2011 17:06

It's a brilliant film! It sounds like your mil is being a bit over the top. Does she have a weird puppet phobia or something?

bumbly · 21/01/2011 20:55

says she is a professional primary teacher and that not suitable

3 1/2 likes it what can i say

does not like other things but likes all thing spirate at mo

has really wound me up big time this time

gastro would you agree 3 1/2 is ok to see it?

i think she is talking out of her rear frankly. Different things are suitable for different kids imho.

DSD was obsessed with Oliver when she was about that age. You would think that it was wholly unsuitable given it is about crime, prostitution, poverty, murder etc but she thought it was about a little boy and his friends who liked to sing songs alot.

i would have much preferred kermit and his mates.

bumbly · 21/01/2011 21:09

:)

thanks for that!

Haven't seen it for a while but can't remember there being anything particularly shocking about it!

MadAboutQuavers · 22/01/2011 06:47

WTF?

The Muppets ?

And "professional primary teacher" - FFS Hmm

Tell her she's being ridiculous and to leave him alone

slhilly · 22/01/2011 07:04

Your MiL needs to get over herself. It's Muppet Treasure Island, fgs, not the Silence of the Lambs! Tell her that the professionals in this matter are not primary school teachers, they're the British Board of Film Certification, and they've given it a U. So she should get back in her box.

mummyosaurus · 22/01/2011 07:12

I am uptight about TV generally but think your MIL is being silly here.

You have more scary things in most fairy tales, which we read to our kids without thinking about it.

Do you think she is worried about TV watching generally for children? Or does she think you'll be letting him watch "Predator" at 4 1/2? Just trying to work out why her reaction was OTT.

catinthehat2 · 22/01/2011 07:41

I didn't let mine watch tv willynilly but he is YOUR little boy, so what I or anyone else think/s is entirely irrelevant.

if YOU think tv is a problem in some way, no doubt you would deal with it accordingly

apart from that, sounds like MIL was having a bad day and probably feels like a twit now (or should do). nothing like a power struggle, with impotent tears afterwards to bring it home that no matter how much you adore your grandson, he is NOT yours to bring up

monkeyflippers · 22/01/2011 11:21

I haven't seent he film but from what others are saying it sounds fine.

Your MIL is mental. Crying? Over a muppet film? Did you say that she told your dc to "shut it" or did I read that wrong?
