Food to cook before the birth!

Hi,

Many of you might have already seen me posting questions on Mumsnet. I love it!!!

I find it so useful finding out about other mum's experiences now that I will be giving birth to my first baby in five weeks.

I wanted to ask you what kind of food I can cook to freeze while I'm at home waiting. I'm still working from home but in between projects I would like to cook a bit.

The list I have to cook:

  • Lasagna
  • Meatballs and rice/pasta
  • Shepherd's pie / chicken pie
  • Canelloni
  • Mashes (potatoe, carrots, sweet potatoes)
  • DIfferent sauces with pieces of chicken breasts.

Does anyone have more ideas? I can always go to some books but I checked the Jamie's 30 min meals and I found that getting some of the ingredients is much more of a hassle than just cooking something a bit more traditional.

Anyway, if someone has more ideas, please let me know so I can add to my list!!!

Thanks

Paula x

It doesn't count as cooking but we stocked up the freezer with pizzas, bread, milk and veggies. Was a god send in those first frazzled weeks. Oh and the best baby present I got was a ready cooked lasagne! Congratulations and good luck!

I cooked a lot of what you did before DS arrived - it was great in the first few weeks.

I also did lots of baking and froze biscuits and chocolate brownies so that we always had a supply for ourselves, but also because I liked being able to offer them to visitors, without having the hassle of having had to make them specially, IYSWIM.

We had a glut of spuds at the allotment and I made loads of oven chips and roast potatoes which were also fab for just chucking in the oven.

Enjoy the last few weeks of being pg and good luck when your LO arrives - it's marvellous when you get to meet them at last Grin

I made breakfast muffins and banana bread.

only do one-handed food. Your baby will always need feeding/ cuddling just as you sit down to eat! So lots of casseroles, nothing that needs a knife as well :)

But muffins and cakes would be great for when visitors descend.

I'll second the one-handed food!

We froze loads of homemade soups which were great for quick lunches. Also 'one-pots' and casseroles - have a look at bbcgoodfood.com for ideas.

Having said that I think I survived on toast and banana for the first 5 days!

Ratatouille
Curry
Different kinds of Lasagne Veggie/Root veg

Try having a look on at this website from cook they do amazing food, cooked by chefs then frozen, it's YUM, it should give you some good ideas for freezable meals.

soup
curry
casserole

phone number of local chinese/curry/pizza house in case!

muffins and cakes also good pick-me-up esp if you're bf-ing.

Good luck - you sound much more organised than me when DS1 turned up - in the middle of an extension with a barely functioning kitchen.
