Making Breakfast

How old were your children when they started making their own breakfast?

Ds1 (7) can make and spread toast at the weekend but I insist they have cereal before school. I have two other children (including a 4 yr old who goes to school too) and it would be really helpful if i could teach DS1 to make his own and possibly DS2's.

Is this too much to ask of him? And if you do this, how do you start them off with regard to big boxes, heavy milk bottles, spills etc!

How old is your DC3?

What is for breakfast then?

Can you not get some of the things ready the night before like getting the cereal in bowls

I think a 7 yo should be able to put some cereal in the bowl and pour some milk on top.

Of course it's not too much to ask of him!

My DD gets two pancakes out of the fridge, puts them on a plate, heats them in the microwave and sprinkles choc bits on them. She gets herself some orange juice too.
Your DS should be able to manage a box and some milk IMO.

My ds is 2.7....I obv. don't let him make his own breakfast yet but when he 'helps' me he can get the cereal out, pour it into a bowl and add milk! I wouldn't leave him to do it himself as wouldn't trust him in the kitchen on his own (sometimes he decides to put the milk on the floor not in the bowl). However,by 7 I'd think he will easily be capable of getting his own-especially if you only have cereals you want them to eat in the cupboard

Well, spills are inevitable. I spill half the time I pour milk on my cereal.

But I digress...why can't they have toast before school? Both toast and cereal will probably fill them up about the same.

As for heavy milk...my mum used to put milk on a lower shelf in a smaller jug for my brother and I.

Your 7 year old can't make a bowl of cereal ?

Why on earth not? My 3 year old is quite capable of getting the box out of the cupboard, pouring the cereal and adding milk. The only thing he can't do it get the bowl and milk out as he can't reach them.

Why do you need to teach them, don't they see you do it every day?

Sorry, lots of questions but I genuinely can't imagine the situation you're in.

DC3 is a newborn so I need to be feeding, dressing, changing etc.

It's not that he can't do it- just that up until now I always have! Cereal is kept on top of a top cupboard atm so I would move that lower (it's only there because we have very little cupboard space). Heavy milk was one of my main thoughts but decanting it into a smaller jug is a good idea, thank you.

And with regards to toast/cereal choice, it's mainly because we were going through so much bread and it's very expensive!
