Can Anyone Recommend an almost-toddler parenting book?

DS has just turned 1. I need to educate myself as regards discipline before it becomes a big issue. What should I be introducing now, what I shuld let go etc etc.

Yes, I really am that clueless!

For example - watching Supernanny last night and she was explaining the 2.5 year old really needed to learn to sit at the tab;le for a meal. What age can you expect them to do this? (DS scoffs, gets bored and freaks out if you don't let him down)

Anything by Diane Levy is good, common sense, funny, not patronising.

Ds learnt to sit at the table during his 2 afternoons a week at preschool when he was 20 months.

Now he takes longer than us as he has just got a fork and puts every speck of food on it before eating. So the getting bored and wandering about is more something dh and I have to work on

A good bedtime routine is handy. But he's still little and tiny really.

What about 'The Social Toddler'?
personally, I found that at one it was more appropriate and succesful to encourage communication and enjoyable habits and especially to avoid confrontation than to attempt to instil 'discipline'.

Oooh, 'The Social Toddler' is wonderful! Really positive, helpful book. Made me quite inspired to work at my relationship with ds, and the methods do work. Should be required reading for all parents IMO.

I've just got "What to expect - the toddler years" out of the library. It has a section per month covering general development, expectations, ideas for activities, tips for common problems etc.

highlander · 12/10/2005 10:15

The Social Toddler is by far the best book I've ever had!! It explains everything from a toddler's perspective - good sound clinical psychology. I like the way it explains why you should approach play, discipline etc in a certain way. Love the photo story boards and the role-play with adults.

Cannot recommend it enough!

Tahnk you sooooo much for the recommendation Blu and Frannykenstein!
