Boys and dancing/ballet

I have this feeling that my 6 year old boy has quite a lovely way of moving to music. he is very expressive, uses his whole body, arms, hands and is somehow elegant. I don't know anything about dancing but I think it could be something he would enjoy and he is interested in doing some kind of dance/movement to music classes, but I can only find ballet classes anywhere near us and I am not sure ballet is the right thing for him to do - am thinking it is too controlled.

Anyone got any suggestions or had experience of boys (or not-ballet-type-of-girls) and dancing?

My ds does streetdance which he adores!

My dad is a dance teacher and has taught many boys in ballroom and Latin.

DS (4) goes to ballet and loves it. Dnephew (16) does ballet and tap and enjoys going still, even though he never takes it too seriously

what do thy do at the small kids ballet classes, can they really dance and run around a bit or do they have to concentrate on doing the steps?

My 6 year old is like yours GoingLoopy and seems to have natural rythym. However there is not a cat in hells chance I would get him to ballet! Agree with ILoveTiffany, have you looked into streetdance?

I used to teach ballet and tap to littleys and some of the boys were excellent. I had two boys particularly who continued til they went to uni the year before last and they were amazing, we did a fantastic show before they left and they still do it now, the girls at school thought they were gods, which they loved!!
It's very tap dogs!
Although I agree street dance is obviously becoming a lot more popular now due to BGT etc.
I would take him and see

DS is nearly 5 and likes ballet. he is in an informal class, (NOT grades/ primary exam type class) they do some ballet exercises for suppleness and strength but also skipping, galloping, creative movement, mime, and bouncing about being frogs.

Different teachers will vary in their approach. worth looking a a few in your area. I think its easy for DS to like his class as there are 3 other boys in it as well as a clutch of pink frilly girls. Th boys wear shorts and T shirt and black ballet shoes.

My ds (11) does Irish dancing - quite a few boys do that. Boys are apparently more likley to do well at competitions (as they stand out). Not that ds competes - he just enjoys going to teh classes.

There is a boy in my dd's ballet class. I thought she might think it odd, but he wasn't there on Saturday and she exclaimed as she came out, 'XX wasn't in today, and there was NO ONE to be the prince!'

My nephew also dances. He enjoys it.

Ds2 (8) goes to a tap/modern class where not only is the only boy, he's also the oldest. He really enjoys it. He also goes to a fantastic streetdance class where there are more boys than girls. He just loves dancing and is really lovely to watch.
