Bumbo's, What do you think????

I have a 6 month old who just LOVES to sit up. She can sit unaided but will fall every few minutes when trying to reach for toys and such. Do you think a Bumbo would be a good idea. It's not going to stop her strengthening her back and stuff is it??????
It would be really handy if I could let her sit when I'm doing things but she doesn't fall over and I have to rescue her every 3 mins

I thought the bumbo was great and worked really well for dd and meant that she could come with me round the house and sit easily when I was dusting etc. Also used it to feed in to start with. However dd worked out how to get out of it at 8 months - it is supposed to be up to at least a year!! therefore not as great a buy as I hoped it would be!

They are fab but last for a short time only.
Don't know if it would be worth it at this stage as very soon your dd will be up on her own.
Try borrowing one.

tweetyfish · 06/10/2005 11:32

Definatly good idea...
However I found that DD couldn't reach for stuff over the sides very well to reach for toys - however wether that was the bumbo's fault or she being lazy I don't know!
I still use it now (she's 11 months) as it means she is anchored to one spot... like when we are in the bathroom washing her big brother (She's not in the bath with it - just waiting for her turn!). She's not worked out how to get out of it - yet!

My dd never really took to the Bumbo seat...always started to cry within 2 mins of sitting in it. Ended up giving it to my neighbour!

LadyTophamHatt · 06/10/2005 17:04

I bought one for DS3 when he was about 14 weeks.

By the time he was 16 weeks he'd worked out how to get out if it.
I think they work better if your baby is quite chunky but my ds3 was(and still is) a little string bean so he had loads of room to manouerve in it.

Waste of money IMO.

Kelly1978 · 06/10/2005 17:11

is she is already trying to sit I dont think it worth it. She will soon get a lot more steadier. I got one for my dts and one still uses it but he cant reach toys from it either. He's a telly addict, so its good for that or for watching his twin play (the one that can sit) but nt a lot else!

CookieQueen · 06/10/2005 17:13

my DS1 loved his bumbo, it went everywhere with us; Seaside, grannies, friends houses. However DS2 can't stand it and trys to "throw" himself out of it!

Tommy · 06/10/2005 17:16

had one for DS2 and agree with the others that it's more short term that I thought it woulde. It was great for a cuople of moths or so. Mine has been lent out to at least 2 other people so perhaps you could borrow one from somewhere?

Rarrie · 06/10/2005 17:39

DD loved hers. Found it particularly good for weaning, and letting her just sit and watch things, like me in the kitchen.

However, they are very expensive for what they. I think worthwhile if you're planning on having more than one child...otherwise see if you buy it second hand. (Have found mine to be in perfect nick after 1 child... so hope to sell on after second!)

chicagomum · 06/10/2005 17:46

DS is a chunky baby (10lbs at birth) and he has been able to get out of his bumbo since he was 8 months old. It was useful for a short amount of time but once they are crawling they seem to have no interest in staying in one place. As others say at this stage it is an expensive buy so if you can borrow one then go for it.

NannyL · 06/10/2005 19:23

i know an avergase size 5 1/2 month old who gets out of his so easily (he doesnt sit unaided, and is not particularly strong etc) now hes 6 months 1 week and they dont use it any more

LOTS of babies can get out of them despite what they say! (and if your baby is one of them theere not a lot of good!)

woosmummy · 07/10/2005 13:58

Deeply disapointed with woo's bumbo - hated it at first, but then at 4 or 5 months was arching his back and "poping" himselfout of it. Do think thst it ncuraged him to sit up better than if he didin't have one

HRHTheDuchessofChaville · 07/10/2005 14:06

My ds hated his, only perserved with it for about a week as it was stressing him out too much. I sold it a car boot sale for £5 - what a bargain.

PrettyCandles · 07/10/2005 14:12

I don't care for the Bumbo. It certainly looks cute, but frankly I think that a baby should do things when he's ready, and not be pushed into position before then. So if a baby cannot sit up unaided, then they should not sit up unsupported. Personally I would never put a child who cannot sit into a Bumbo. I would use a beanbag, bouncer, tilted highchair, buggy or carseat instead. I think a Bumbo is the sitting version of a baby-walker.

As for trinityrocks' question, I think at this stage a Bumbo would be a waste of money. Your dd will be improving her balance all the time, and will probably be able to reach without falling over within a few weeks. Besides, reaching from sitting is an introduction to crawling or bumshuffling, so why restrict it?

trinityrocks · 12/10/2005 16:53

ooops well, dd2 loves it to sit and be with us at mealtimes and when she is watching dd1. She can sit unaided and does alot but the bumbo has helped me tons. She hasn't tried to get out of it and I don't think she can.

DS2 wasn't a massive baby and didn't get out of his until he was nearly 7 months (started crawling then so had more 'manouvreability' (sp)). We bought it when he was 3 months old, and used it for feeding him from - 4 months (go on slap me for weaning him too early ) until he was able to sit in the high chair comofrotabely.

LOVED it, and would definitely buy one again if I had another child - despite the relativly 'short' usage time (it got used longer than the bouncy chair did with DS1 - and DS1 didn't even 'move' until he was about 11 months old!)
