Hi,

6 years ago I had twins, and we followed a routine and they napped in their room, lights off etc. We lived in a small bungalow at the time and so this didnt worry me, especially as they had each other for company.

Now I have a three week old, and the advice has changed, that babies need to sleep with you for all naps. Is this what everyone does. It doesnt seem practical to me to have a baby try to sleep in the living room until 6 months, as i would have thought they would be disturned by the noise. Also she wont fit in a moses basket by then, so does everyoe use a travel cot or something similar?

No I put mine down in the cot upstairs once theywere too big for the Moses basket and then got on with stuff

The baby wouldn't have beenable to nap in the same room as me with a toddler around too!

I THINK (I might be wrong) that naps are lighter sleep and so less risky than night time sleep in terms of SIDS. But I am aware that the SIDS advice is still to have them with you. Not sure, but DS never napped in the room with me after about 6 weeks.

Sounds like SIDS advice means you have to go upstairs and take a nap too...sounds like a great idea, though a little impractical

My DD is 4 months old and when she naps at home (i.e. when not in pram/baby carrier) she takes them upstairs in her cot. I just have the baby monitor on. She used to nap in her moses basket in our room but has recently outgrew it. When she napped in our room I occasionally napped with her but not every time.

My DD gets around 15 hours sleep a day and there's no way I need/could have that much so I'm not always napping when she is.

Also, at night she goes to sleep around 7pm. This is when we have dinner and our evening, so we're not sleeping with her then either.

mine's only 7 weeks but she naps where ever I am - usually in moses basket. We've done this since birth and made no effort to reduce noise/light for daytime - result being she seems to have differentiated night and day quickly (dark and quiet equals night and time for long sleep!) and she will sleep through anything during the day - can hoover round her basket etc with no problems!
not sure what we'll do when she's too big for basket but will definitely be whatever's easiest for me!

stewmaker · 17/01/2011 11:19

with you if you have a moses basket or pram, but in their own cot asap with a monitor. I found ds slept better in the quiet of his own room and for longer, and it helped with getting him to sleep at night.

lucybrad · 17/01/2011 11:21

I was thinking of using a travel cot, and putting it in the dining room which is open plan to the living room. Trouble is I feel I have to follow sids advice, even though it goes against what I feel is best parenting. If I didnt follow Sids advice and something happened I would never forgive myself.

Its not easy being a parent is it!!

My DS is 20 months and naps in the lounge on the couch. He's always slept in here during the day. He was in his moses basket or pram when smaller, or on a big pillow on the floor but now climbs up on the couch with his blanket.

In fact, he's snoring away and keeping my feet warm as I type.

I do sometimes go and do other jobs but we live in a flat so I can hear him when he wakes.

COCKadoodledooo · 17/01/2011 11:39

Ds2 only ever napped in the pram/pushchair, because it was the only place the bugger fell asleep.

"In fact, he's snoring away and keeping my feet warm as I type." Brilliant!

DD used to sleep in her playmat in the living room, but I never knew about this advice and at around 4 months she started sleeping her naps in her cot. She also started sleeping on her own in her bedroom quite early, I used to sleep with her in her room not to disturb DP as he has problems to sleep and was the one working. But then I thnk it was at around 4 months she stopped waking up for feeds so I moved back to our bedroom, with a comunicator.

As I said, had no idea of this, we live on the Isle of Man and went to prenting classes etc. and never have been told this.
