Help! How do you stop your young DC climbing onto older sibling's bunk bed?

Just watched my 15 month old scuttle up the bunk bed ladder in the older DC's bedroom. We can't keep him out of the room (we live in a flat and all the toys are in there).

Any good techniques for rendering the upper bunk inaccessible? NB: the ladder is integrated.

no idea sorry good luck

I bought a bunk bed with a re movable ladder for this reason

I guess just let him after a bit of practise he'll be fine

We're lucky that we can keep DD2 out of DD1s room. It's not so much the falling off the ladder which would worry me - its the falling off the bed!

ERk...really? He's a complete craziac...I'm 99% sure he'd try to dive off the top bunk at some point.

I'm thinking about removing one or two of the ladder slats and getting 4.5 yr old DS to deal with the gap.

well yes you could remove slats

I guess I just meant if you'be decided that you cant keep him out of there then there isn't much you can

Perhaps I should just bubble-wrap his head Grin

I had this exact same problem with DS3. I fashioned a board thing out of wood that locked over the ladder rungs so none of my DC could climb up it during the day.

As DS3 got more confident on his feet I removed it and he has been fine. A few falls of the ladder (not high) made him more aware of being careful. And I never allowed him in there without his older brother being there.

What about the head/foot sides of the beds? Are these bars....... Because they usually navigate these instead if the ladder becomes unusable!!

Joey44 · 15/01/2011 17:57

we turned ours around so the ladder faced the wall. Our 4yr old would climb up the side instead with a little help from us.

WeirdFamily · 15/01/2011 20:48

Ah I quite like that plan, Joey! We'e removed one ladder slat, and DS1 can still get up and down, and it looks too tricky for DS2 to negotiate. Otherwise we will resort to turning it around.

did the same as Joey. Worked fine! Older one just learned to climb and jump more carefully!
