baby sick when lying flat

my SIL 6wk old baby has taken to being sick every time she is lying flat - moses basket, nappy change, on floor...anywhere - to the point that they have stopped putting her in moses basket at night in case she chokes.

So the poor wee thing is now sitting in her infant carrier (at night as well, instead of moses basket) which is totally against current recommendations but preferable to the regular sickness, choking and distress and potential danger of choking completely...

Any advice?

Has she got reflux or pyloric stenosis if very violently sick? Have they seen a dr for advice and diagnosis.

My dd lived in her bouncy chair or car seat for the first few months and we raised all the mattresses at head end with rolled blankets/towels underneath or Ikea kids stools under the 2 top feet of cot. Don't attempt to lie her down even for nappy change or to sleep for at least 30 minutes after a feed.

is she actually choking teuch, or is she just afraid that she will?

Ds is like this (he is nine weeks) - I swear that when I lift his legs to change his nappy I'm simply tipping out what I've just put in . He is sick every time he burps, at least three times during a nappy change, at least three times when I put him down to sleep in his moses basket - and yes, occasionally he gags a little as he does it (though that has nothing to do with what position he is in, apparently). Poor mite is permanently sodden round his neck!

However I have not changed what I do, and he has never choked on it. It's not like adults being sick - babies can't breathe through their mouths, only their noses, so they can't so easily "breathe" it in. Reassurance from the hv should help.

yes, I should add that ds laughs and smiles while he is being sick, so no reflux there - reflux is a different kettle of fish!

Babies can breathe through their mouths, they just don't tend to do so.

My dd used to be sick a lot, and possetted and dribbled all the time. I put her to sleep on her stomach from the day we came home from hospital. I don't recall her ever vomiting or possetting while on her tummy, though like Miaou's ds she had a permanently wet neck from v'ing or pos'ing while on her back at other times of th day.

Ds used to do this all the time as a small baby - up to about 3 months, maybe? We used to stick him in his car seat by about the third time he'd been fed and possetted each night - out of desperation. Lizs's advice about raising the head of the cot is excellent.

I had the same problem with my dd until she was about 4 months....I used to lie awake listening and just waiting for everything to start pouring back out!....no retching, but quite violent possets at times.....In the end we also just rolled up blankets to raise the mattress up at the head end. Never completetly resolved the problem, but certainly eased it.
Then she just grew out of it
